Dr. Julie Sun, MD

I saw Dr. Sun for a little over a year, starting from before I became pregnant, through week 35 of my pregnancy. As a regular gynecologist, I found her to be helpful and informative. Once I became pregnant and started seeing her for prenatal care, I was really disappointed in her lack of familiarity with standard Kaiser labor & delivery practices. She couldn't answer simple questions I had about how things worked, and would tell me I could ask them myself. When? While I'm in labor? I also found that she addressed other questions like she was explaining something to a child. Other questions she would simply ignore. For example, I asked her if she could tell me what percentile my baby was measuring in after our 20 week anatomy scan. She said it didn't really matter, and then wouldn't tell me. I asked her at 30 weeks about my baby's position, because I was becoming suspicious that he was breech (he was) and I showed her where I thought I was feeling a head. She didn't palpate me,… and just said that it was possible - not what I was looking for. She asked me the same question about medical preferences at four separate appointments, with no indication that she realized she was asking something we'd already been over. Looking back, I think she was just really disengaged. She repeatedly would blame things on the new computer system, and was constantly referring to how things would work when she was in private practice, which had no relevance since I was seeing her through my HMO. The last straw was when she made a really belittling comment about some of the complementary treatments I was trying to encourage my breech baby to flip, like acupuncture and chiropractic treatments. She told me and my husband, "If there was any evidence that those practices were effective in any way, we'd be using them, but you're welcome to try whatever makes you feel better." Meanwhile every other doctor I've seen at Kaiser since is recommending body positioning exercises like Spinning Babies and moxibustion (Chinese medicine) to aid with breech flipping. After that appointment I changed to another provider at Kaiser and after 1 visit am already 100 times happier. I would not recommend Dr. Sun at all.

I saw this doctor because I had concerns and wanted a pelvic exam, and she was reluctant to do it because it was "the end of the day". She finally agreed and did it while laughing with the assistant in the room the entire time... it felt so violating. After the 10 minute appointment, I told her I had a few questions and she said "um... maybe just one?". I asked her one question and she said she didn't have time to answer it. Her explanation was that she had to go to her next appointment.... fair enough. After I dressed and left the room, I heard her laughing on the phone in the very next room with the door wide open. Never had such a bad experience with a doctor. Can't believe this woman has a medical license.
