Waste of time! Multiple antibody levels off the chart. He said that he didnt know if hashimoto thyroiditis was autoimmune. WoW! If it doesn't fit into an exact category, he can't help you. What a disappointment after years struggling and having Mayo Clinic MN, Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, and NIH all agreeing its autoimmune. Dr. Birnbaum and his wisdom says he doesn't think its autoimmune. I would respect him more by just saying I'm not smart enough to help you any further. If it is not text book, don't waste your time.

Dr. Birnbaum did not understand my health conditions (outside of his area), and more frustratingly, he pretended to and spent the whole appointment on that rather than what I came for. He didn't follow up as he said he would either, and his office lost some of my test results. He lied in his notes as well (for example, his note said that he personally reviewed a particular scan that actually didn't work on his computer, so he had just given me back the disc). At one point, he started a sentence with, "not to be paternalistic, but..." That tells me that he knows he's being condescending but also can get away with it. This visit did more harm than good, and I hope he learns how to carefully listen and pay attention to what he's doing so he can reduce errors and maybe help some future patients more safely.

How can people think he is the best? He thinks in such a small box that he doesn’t even listen patients or care about what they are felling. He just tells you what you should fell and ignores every symptom you tell him so you could fit into his narrow box.

I recently had an appt with Dr. Julius Birnbaum, Neurologist at Johns Hopkins in MD. He was so in-depth that I wished I had been better prepared; so I decided to create a post for anyone going to see him. My visit was 2 to 2 1/2h long (shocking!) The majority of the time was spent reviewing my records. (I had faxed approx. 75 pages of medical history so I was pleasantly surprised when he mentioned that he had started reviewing my history the night before my appt.) I also brought paper copies of dr progress notes, labs, scans, biopsies, etc. Although I had made myself a notebook with dividers for the different body systems, I was still not adequately prepared to answer all of his questions. Dr. Birnbaum is really proficient at working to create a complete picture of his patient. He first asked for a complete chronology of my history "...in the exact order of how Sjogren's presented." For example, erratic blood pressure and high heart rate was followed by severe abdominal distention… and that was followed by..." My body seemed to go from one crisis to another, so he wanted to know, how long each phase/crisis lasted, what meds were used at the time, etc. This entailed a thorough discussion of each body system and how each was affected. He also wanted to know about all meds I had ever taken, why some were discontinued, what was the dose, how long I was on them, what side effects did I have, etc. He also questioned several of the meds I'm on now, checked dosages, and discontinued a few of them right there on the spot. I can't emphasize enough how important it would be to review your medical history in detail so that you are totally refreshed; and to combine that with your medical work-up. (Oh, your dr needs to send a current progress note that is related to your neurological need to see him.) I did not bring any scans or CD's because I felt pretty confident that my studies were done at very reputable facilities. My lip and leg biopsies and a lot of my testing was done by UNC and Wake Forest. He said that these institutions were highly respected and that he agreed with their diagnoses. At the end of the visit, he developed a long term and short term plan. The only shortcoming I've noticed is follow-through. I've called twice to have his notes sent to my dr and he also ordered labs that were supposed to be sent to lab corp. I have emailed twice and called twice trying to get that submitted.

He constantly gets in his own way & doesn’t have the people skills to work w/ other physicians. He then ends up dropping the ball. This Dr. does not belong seeing patients. He would get lost crossing the street.

He is a very caring doctor with great knowledge in his field. He does spend a lot of time with me and has an awsome bedside manner. I do recommend him to other patients. Please don't consider his office staff when you are rating him.

I didn't have trouble getting an appointment. I wish I did. He was rude, condescending, didn't listen to the information I supplied to him about my symptoms and made a diagnosis contrary to the results of the tests he ordered. I was greatly disappointed by my experience with a doctor at Johns Hopkins.
