Dr. Kaihong Mi, MD, PhD, MD

My father had a bad valve that was replaced couple of years ago. His heart doctor put him on coumadin to prevent blood clots from forming on the valve. Last year, my father was hospitalized because of bleeding while on coumadin. Blood tests showed that he had dangerously low platelet count, so much so that his heart doctor stopped the coumadin. Dr. Mi came to see my father in the hospital. Even though his platelet count was dangerously low, she started him on blood thinner. His platelet count was down to 1000. I later learned that when your platelet count drops below 15000, you should NEVER be on blood thinner. My father could have bled to death and even died. But the vigilance of the other doctors saved him and the blood thinner was stopped, thankfully.

My father initially saw Dr Mi for a suspicion of cancer. A biopsy was performed of the liver that came back benign. Instead of searching further, Dr. Mi was not going to see him for another 6 months, even though he continued to be in more and more severe pain, withering away to nothing. It wasn't until after we had to take him to the ER that we got another CT scan and was informed by the ER staff that he had cancer in his body. We then got a biopsy of the spine, which confirmed he had metastasized cancer in his spine. Still we had not heard follow up from her and had to call to get information. When we went in for a follow up, she still had no answers for us and was not very comforting when explaining anything to us, nor did she speak in terms that we could understand. She almost seemed annoyed when we did ask questions that she had to answer, sighing as we asked. We had decided to get a second opinion, which she actually had the nerve to give an attitude about, saying that… most normal people don't do that and we should give her the respect to let her know. Well, we went and got a second opinion, and guess what? By doing ONE blood test that was NEVER performed (a CA 19-9) , we got the devastating diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, now at stage 4. This comes after Dr Mi told us over and over again that the mass that they saw on the petscan was only a cyst and not worth looking into. Had we known that there was this test out there, that she never performed, we would have demanded it months ago or went elsewhere at that time. Our second opinion not only did the blood test, but was also able to get a biopsy of it, as Dr Mi never even looked into. Had we had an adequate doctor from the beginning, we may not have had to face the devastation that we are facing now. I would not recommend ANYONE to see Dr Mi as she does not care about her patients, but only the paycheck that comes along with them.
