As a radiation oncologist and co-medical director of the breast program at City of Hope® Cancer Center Chicago, Karan Shah, M.D., M.B.A., specializes in treating women diagnosed with breast cancer using innovative and targeted radiation therapy techniques. Dr. Shah’s expertise in radiation oncology includes delivering 3-D conformal radiation, intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiation therapy, intraoperative radiation therapy, brachytherapy, hyperthermia and radiopharmaceutical therapy. Dedicated to crafting individualized care plans and to treating each patient with compassion and dignity, Dr. Shah also conducts and manages clinical trials designed to find new approaches to treating a range of cancer types. After moving to the United States at age 12, Dr. Shah attended Loyola University Chicago for his undergraduate studies and a master’s in business administration concentrating on health care management and finance. He then …completed his medical degree at Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, where he earned a merit scholarship and was recognized in his final year with the President’s Medallion for outstanding achievement. Dr. Shah completed his transitional internship at Chicago’s Resurrection Medical Center, followed by a radiation oncology residency at Loyola University Medical Center, serving in 2014 as chief resident. During this time, Dr. Shah conducted leading-edge research into head and neck cancer and radiation oncology – the results of which were published in multiple medical journals – and authored a Phase 1 protocol on the use of both intraoperative radiation therapy and kyphoplasty to treat cancer that had spread to the spine. Dr. Shah continues to hold a teaching position at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in North Chicago.
