Dr. Karen Maria Grant, MD

I had the opportunity to visit Dr. Karen Grant with my mother who is her patient. Of note, I am an intern physician at John Peter Smith Hospital and have done many stints in primary care as a student and now as a resident. I was extremely disappointed in the way that she conducted the visit with my mother. She was very rude, dismissive, and short regarding my mother's concerns as well as my suggestions. She didn't introduce herself, nor give eye contact when she walked in the room. She was condescending about my mother's efforts towards losing weight, stating "She should just eat less and she already knows that," and "I do not run a weight loss clinic." She refused to give us referrals to proper resources that would augment my mother’s weight loss efforts. Dr. Grant is not culturally competent and I fear for patients who do not have an advocate such as myself. My mother will not be returning to her care. Please proceed with caution.

Oh man I did not like Dr. Grant at first. At all. I didn’t like how short the visit was. I didn’t like the brutal honestly. I didn’t like that she straight up told me i needed to lose weight. I didn’t like when she pointed to where I was on the weight chart. I swore I was never going to come back. But then fast forward a couple months and my diabetes was still not under control. So I went back and explained my frustration and she looked at me straight and said “look, medications are great. But the change has to start with YOU. Your habits, your diet, your exercise. Or lack there of”. And it really hit me. I’m now down 12 Pounds and i just feel GOOD. I needed someone to tell it to me straight and not sugar coat it. I’ll tell you now. She’s not a sugar coated doctor. But she’s good and she knows her stuff and that’s what Matters.

I made a huge mistake by calling this doctor excellent. She is quiet possibly the worse excuse of a physician I have ever experienced in my life of being treated by PCP's. I came to her 4 years ago after being her father's patient for 3.5 years and she acted like she was better than anyone and didn't want to touch the patients. She snarls her noise at patients and mocks anything they say. She is highly unprofessional and insulting to her staff and patients. She has almost little to no knowledge of what medications should and should not be prescribed together. Her staff smokes outside like they are at a bar come in and exclaim that the patients smell of cigarettes. When told they must be wrong because you do not smoke they call you a liar and even the doctor supports the smoking nurses in this behavior. The doctor cares nothing about the patients health and needs and the PA is playing doctor and experimenting on the patients with medications and ordering unneeded very extreme tests and… biopsies' of people's perfectly healthy organs. If you value your health stay away!!!

She is quite knowledgeable and willing to help.

This is possibly the worse experience I have had in my life with a medical facility. I never go online to make a review about my experiences but, in this case it is needed. The medical assistant that is an small older hispanic lady with really frizzy hair is possibly the most angry acting MA I have seen to date. She is upset that patient are there interrupting her day. The doctor is the same way only she is more rude and aggressively condescending and arrogant towards her "patient". She is accusatory in questions and unconcerned for the person she is treating. It pains me to say that she should consider a different field that does not involve treating the public. TERRIBLE DOCTOR and STAFF!! The worst I have experienced in my life!!!

Very busy lady, but is efficient and timely in her visits. Short amount of time, but she gets the work done. I appreciate it seeing as though my schedule is so busy. Incredibly smart physician and very knowledgeable.

Don't bother with this Doctor or nurse. It will be the worse mistake of your life and you will run into problem after problem. I only gave one star because I couldn't leave a score of a zero. I hope no one else will ever go through the same bull as me.

My daughter is a college student and Dr. grant was one of the few doctors that would see a sick person who was not an established patient. She has a very busy practice and am guessing, due to the poor reimbursements she gets with the population she serves, she must take a lot of patients a day just to make it financially. With that being said, yes she was a bit rushed, but I can understand why. The most important thing, however is that I found her to be a very competent doctor, responsive, and I trusted her caring for my daughter. I would definitely advise my daughter to seek help from her again, should the need arise.
