Dr. Karen Kimbel Michelena, MD

Please, don’t go to Dr. Michelena because she submitted wrong billing codes to my health plan that I had to pay unnecessarily $1038.37 out of my own pocket. The health insurance informed me that they cannot pay simply because of the diagnostic billing codes submitted by her instead of a routine or preventive billing codes. After listening to the explanation about my semi-annual routine blood work and looked at my record of doctor office visits in their file, my insurance company agreed and called Dr. Michelena to ask for resubmitting of the right billing codes twice that my health plan could cover it. However, she refused to change the wrong billing codes, insisting at first that it was because my visit was a “settlement visit.” Then, a few weeks later she changed to “a problem-based” visit in order to keep justifying the great fault caused by her ignorance of the complicated billing code system of these days. Besides, their persistence of “a problem-based” is not supported at… all by Dr. Michelena’s physician’s note, “Clinical Visit Summary of Today’s Visit” issued on the day of my first visit. For in that document she did not put any mark under the line of “Reason for Visit,” regarding “a problem-based” visit they are clumsily excusing very recently. In addition, the billing office of Lab, where my blood work was done, also called her to change the incorrect billing codes so that they can resubmit the corrected billing codes to the insurance company and I don’t have to pay $1038.37 out of my pocket as well. But Dr. Michelena constantly refused to change the wrong codes. She knew that when I visited her that day, I was not sick at all, neither did I have any complaints about my physical condition, but I came to her merely as one of the semi-annual routine visits, of which appointment was made actually not in hurry but according to their schedule available to take me as a new patient more than a month before. That is also the reason why Dr. Michelena ordered my next appointment six months later for my physical exam. According to my personal experience, most of the physicians I’ve met keep striving hard not only for physical healing but emotional and mental healing of their patients. However, Dr. Karen Michelena is totally opposite to those doctors. In my view, she seems too stubborn to yield herself to good and productive suggestions of other people, and her personality is thwarted enough to abuse her licensed practice of medicine against any patients who declined her suggestion or offer such as her offer to work as my new OBGY. So, it is my conclusion that Dr. Michelena was telling a lie indeed to defend her fault and to justify her wrongdoing through the clumsy excuses of her administrative staffers. Particularly, with her unreasonable judicial mind and unyielding personality it is pretty doubtful to see her being a good doctor.

Excellent. Acutely aware that the patient knows their own body better than text-book scenarios, statistics, etc., and comes to her conclusions of diagnosis and best treatment based on the appropriate tests and patient input in terms of past and present tolerability - NOT "99% of OTHER patients tolerate this well, so you WILL too". She LISTENS - no "God-complex" with her. This country needs more of HER and less of THEM who expect you to blindly follow them "just because". I have enough medical experience of my own to know that "a passive patient is a dead patient". If you feel the same, this is the best doctor for you.

One of the best doctor of my life!

Dr Michelina is a rare gem! She is extremely approachable, knowledgable with a bedside manner that is rarely seen in physicians these days. I have been with her for several years and recommend her highly to friends and family. Do not hesitate to sign up as a new patient with Dr Michelina!!!

She is one of the good ones. It will be so difficult to find one like her esp. since now I am all the way down in TX. Dr. Michelena treated me while I was living close to her office. Maybe there is still hope that somehow there can be someone as cool and nice and caring as her.

Dr Michelena is caring, efficient, and knowledgeable. Will be with her til the end. Bedside manner is tops, and she really listens to you. She is one of the few doctors who is willing to work with you, and help you maintain your overall health and dignity. Highly recommend.
