Summary
Dr. Karen Tom was raised on a farm in East Texas. She completed a master’s degree in education at the University of Texas and taught school in Florida and Seattle before returning to school herself ultimately graduating from medical school in San Antonio. After four years of surgery training at Swedish Hospital, she completed board certification in emergency medicine and thereafter had broad experience from large urban to small rural hospitals. She has previously served on the board of trustees for King County Medical Society and the Washington State Medical Association. She first had the opportunity to work at Snoqualmie Valley Hospital in the 1980s, in 1997 and again since 2004. Until a few years ago she was part-time clinical instructor in the emergency department at the University of Washington Medical Center for 11 years. In 1990 she moved to Issaquah and until 2012 worked for many years on the board of trustees for the Issaquah Alps Trails Club.
