Dr Kate E. Pettit, MD

Dr. Pettit provided me with excellent care while I was pregnant with my son. I was seeing a different doctor when I experienced cramping and bleeding about half way through my pregnancy. So, I requested an appointment with Dr. Pettit at the Maternal and Fetal Medicine Clinic at UVA to get a second opinion. She saw me immediately, spent an ample amount of time talking with me and explaining my options to me. I ended up choosing to get a cerclage (the very next day). Dr. Pettit also prescribed progesterone suppositories. Because Dr. Pettit took my situation seriously, my story had a happy ending, and I was able to carry my baby to term. I am sincerely grateful for the attention and care Dr. Pettit gave to me.

I met Dr. Pettit in 2015 when I was planning to start a family. She was so nice from the beginning! I was very excited to know that I was going to have a good doctor who was going to take care of me. I got pregnant with my son at the end of 2015. I had no complications through out my whole pregnancy. However, the delivery of my son was not what I expected. After being in labor for 3 days, I had to have a c section. I was very scared but I will never forget the moment Dr. Pettit came into the room, reassure me that everything was going to be fine and even though she was supposed to be in the office that day, she told me she was going to get ready to do the c section and deliver my baby. I was so relieved knowing Dr. Pettit was going to be with me during this very hard time of my pregnancy. Moving forward, at the end of 2017 I got pregnant with my daughter and of course I was more than happy to go back and see Dr. Pettit. As soon as she walked in the room, she hugged me and remembered… me! I did have some complications with my pregnancy but Dr. Pettit was very reassuring and always told me that everything was going to be ok. I was very disappointed when she gave me the news she was going to move to California! She always made sure I saw her on every appointment before her departure. Even afterwards, she gave me her email address so I could let her know how the pregnancy was going. I sent her emails with all my concerns and she was kind enough to answer all of them. I will always remember Dr. Pettit as a dedicated doctor who truly cares about their patients. I will never forget her!!

My wife and I met Dr. Pettit in the most stressful time of our lives. We were at 26 weeks in our pregnancy with my wife's blood pressure through the roof. My wife had been transported to UVA for our local hospital. At the time we did not know that Dr. Pettit had been contacted and requested that we be transfered to her care. A short time after arriving at UVA Dr. Pettit and another member of her staff come to our room. She began to explain what was going on and what we could expect as well as what we needed to prepare for. The level of her knowledge and professionalism was truly amazing. Dr. Pettit showed true compassion and caring during our pregnancy as well as after. Not only did she save my sons life, she was also keeping an eye on him after her care was done. I can honestly say this world is blessed to have Dr. Pettit. She is a absolutely beautiful and caring person. If you find yourself in Dr. Pettit's care you are in the hands of a true angel.

We met Dr. Pettit during our first pregnancy after we found out we were expecting twins. Little did we know that the surprises were just beginning. Having never been pregnant before, expecting twins, and learning that one twin had significant issues, we were overwhelmed and scared. Dr. Pettit was amazing. She was positive, understanding, caring, and really took our family under her wing. The whole pregnancy was an emotional roller coaster and we lost Twin A at 22 weeks. Somehow, even with the remaining twin being transverse right up until delivery, Dr. Pettit was able to avoid a c-section and we delivered both the living and non-living babies vaginally. To top that off, she came in on her day off to deliver them! I was incredibly scared, sad, happy....just a wreck. Dr. Pettit was steady and nurturing, but let me know when certain things had to be done. I can't say enough about her. We are currently 33 weeks along with our second pregnancy (in Ohio now) and I had the hardest… time picking a new OBGYN as no one quite compares to Dr. Pettit. I am eternally grateful for the way she cared for our family. My husband and I just loved her!

I had a complicated pregnancy from the start. I found out I was pregnant, my husband was active duty army (stationed away from home), we just took in a four year old abused foster child, and I working a new job. I was scared about being pregnant for the first time but quickly got excited when it came to my first ultrasound at 10 weeks. The joy of my pregnancy was ripped from me when I saw the ultrasound techs facial expression go from smiling to a stern concerned look. She stopped talking to me, stood up, and stated “I need to go get the mid wife.” I heard whispers in the hallway and a mid wife then came in. She told me “something was wrong” with my baby and gave me the option to see a maternal fetal specialist at UVA or to abort. Mind you I was all by myself. She then said the statement that pierced my heart “of all my years being a midwife I love my job 99% of the time but this situation is the 1% where I do not like it. I’m sorry about your baby.” I was so upset and left the… mid wife office feeling crushed. Once at UVA (my husband was able to be home from the army with me) we thought the visit was part of the process that we would be told once again “we are sorry about your baby” speech. However, it was completely far from that when we met Dr Pettit. She was so kind and never once spoke of our babies US as a Death sentence. She gave us realistic information and was 100% supportive. Fast forward to 26 weeks gestation I was admitted for complications. Melody (our daughter has Turners Syndrome, pleural effusions, and what was thought possible hydrops). Dr Pettit still was strong for me despite a NICU doctor coming into my room when my husband went to get lunch and stated rather bluntly “your daughter is telling you that she is dying. I can deliver her today and let her have her last breaths on your chest” and then walked out of the room. Dr Pettit did not once show me false hope but was supportive that she gave me strength. At 28 weeks Melody was born. Via emergency C section. I felt like I had the flu suddenly upon waking that morning and had a ripping sensation in my abdomen. Dr. Pettit delivered her in less than a minute and saved her life. It appeared that my placenta had ruptured and Melody was starting to decompensate. During the Chaos of events that led me to the operating room and having 30 people in there (my husband counted) since a fetal code was called; Dr Pettit NEVER once yelled, shouted, or showed poor etiquette to the medical staff. I will never forget she turned to a nurse and stated calmly “call a code her heart rate is dropping.” I heard the nurse scream and then run out of the operating room. Dr Pettit then looked at the Anesthesia resident and stated “this baby has to come now.” From incision to delivery was less than one minute on the operating room report. I screamed is my baby alive is she alive!” When dr Pettit helped take down the sterile field so that I could see my baby being worked on by the NICU team. She told me softly “she is alive. She is alive.” I can not thank dr Pettit enough for saving our Melody. I believe God places certain people in our lives for a reason. We were told by UVAs genetic physician that Melodys chance of survival was 1 in 3000. That’s .003% I’m writing this review as Melody is running around my feet, smiling, and eating Cheetos. She turns 2 years old 8-18-18. God is so good

I really cannot say enough good things about Dr. Pettit. Her compassion, encouragement, and knowledge as a physician were evident when we first met her. From the very beginning she was always caring and encouraging through a very emotional and scary time in our lives. I was diagnosed with cancer while 7 weeks pregnant, had abdominal surgery at 9 weeks, went through chemotherapy during my second trimester, and had to make some tough decisions about how to deliver our son. Dr. Pettit walked us step-by-step through my pregnancy, explaining without overwhelming us and encouraging us as we made decisions. We felt like she continually did what was best for our family. My husband and I prayed for an OB doctor that would be encouraging and wise that we could trust with my safety and the safety of our child. We were so thankful it was Dr. Pettit. We quickly fell in love with her and knew we could trust her. Her dedication as a doctor is incredible. I am an RN and understand how much… time it takes to care for your patients. Not only is her medical knowledge astounding, but she spent a great deal of time researching our specific circumstances, consulting doctors in various fields multiple times with the goal of giving us the best options specific to our circumstances. My husband and I always felt like we were her only patients even though we knew we were one of many. She was always quick to respond to emails or phone calls and took time out of her day to visit me when I was in the hospital for other reasons. I now have a healthy 3-month-old baby boy who was delivered by Dr. Pettit. We could not have asked for a better doctor and will never be able to thank her enough for the care she provided. We will miss seeing her at UVA, but California is blessed to gain such an outstanding physician.

Dr. Pettit was with us at a very stressful time. She did an excellent job. Highly recommend.

Dr. Pettit gave me hope from our first meeting. An empathetic and gracious person, she made sure I knew that a team of caring professionals would be by my side working and communicating with my local doctor, whom I was most familiar with. From the day of our diagnosis until my discharge after having baby I never felt alone. Because of my first visit with Dr. Pettit I felt comfortable enough to travel alone to my appointments at UVA, which allowed my husband to stay and care for our four year old. Clear, comforting, and reassuring she was easy to talk to and coordinated consultations with other team members quickly. She answered all of my many, many questions and calmed my fears about my impending c-section. When I found out she would deliver our baby boy I sailed through the remaining part of my pregnancy. My thoughts turned to “stay put, baby! Dr. Petit will take care of you.” During the c-section she talked me through whatever I wanted to know and continued to be warm, and clear,… about everything that was happening. Knowing she was the first one to lay her hands on my son is a blessing. I’ll always be grateful for her calming and confident presence during a challenging time for me and my family. I cannot thank you enough, Dr. Pettit.

I began seeing Dr. Pettit for a twin pregnancy in 2016. The year prior, I had experienced a late loss with a singleton, so to say I was anxious with my twin pregnancy was an understatement. Dr. Pettit never made me feel silly or like a bother with my questions or worries. She treated me with such understanding and compassion at every turn. She took the time to explain things to me and made sure I was comfortable with decisions we made regarding my pregnancy care. She is an outstanding doctor in every way!
