Dr. Kathryn Ann Coulson, MD

Worst office staff of the year. These people don’t care and refuse to accept responsibility. Have fun trying to defend yourselves to those sworn to care for you. Something would always come up and they would have to reschedule my appointment. I’ve been trying to see Dr. Coulson for several months now. Finally on the day of my appointment, her office calls me and says they won’t be able to see me because of lab tests I should’ve known about. No reminder from them at all. Ended up hanging up on me when I tried expressing that I was in pain and just trying to be seen. Dr. Coulson refuses. Shameful experience and I hope they receive the same care they provide in the future.

Knowledgeable, up-to-date, curious and balanced about new research; willing to try new things. She diagnosed me with Sjogren's after 30 years of misery when dozens of other docs could not.

I've had half a dozen rheumatologists since my adventures with autoimmune disease began. Dr. Coulson is hands down the most knowledgeable and most compassionate rheumy I've ever encountered. The office is very professional, there's an easy atmosphere of trust going both ways. Coulson is a smart and emotionally intelligent woman with an up-to-date understanding of current standards of care; she also carefully pays attention to what's on the horizon for care as well as employs a deep understanding of protocols of the past.

I thought that Dr. Coulson was a good doctor because she was finally able to give me a diagnosis, but I was never satisfied with the level of care I received from her. She did not properly evaluate me at the time of diagnosis. She diagnosed me with primary Sjögren's syndrome. The only problem is that I have almost every symptom of SLE as well. She did not order the specific antibody testing associated with this disease. I have had to beg and plead with her for low dose prednisone because the other dmards and immunosuppressants were not keeping my symptoms under control. I have now began seeing a renowned Washington University rheumatologist and the difference is astounding. I now see more then ever how much Dr. Coulson was neglecting me-my life has been very negatively impacted by the whole experience and it will certainly take some time to recover.

She is a decent rheumatologist, but I don't feel like she does enough for me. I have been without medicine for several weeks waiting for her to answer the email or telephone message I left for her, which I feel is unacceptable. She ignores abnormalities in my routine labs that I feel are of concern. She was supposed to complete a referral for me nearly a month ago and it still has not been done. If you need to a lot of attention from your rheumatologist, she may not be the one for you.

I did some research, and read positive reviews about Dr. Coulson online, so I decided to make an appointment. The only "complaint" is that her soonest appointment for a new patient was 2 months out. But she was well worth the wait. She spent 45 minutes with me on the first appoinment,and 30 minutes on the second. She is very thorough, and explains everything, gives advice, is open to questions and involves the patient in the decision making process. She ordered all the tests to do a complete work up, and followed up with me by phone afterward. I literally couldn't ask for more in a physician. I'm a male, and if you have any reservations about seeing a female physician, forget about them. She is the best.
