Kathryn Nevins, APRN, CNP

Kathy Nevins, DNP is a Nurse Practitioner, who joined Essentia Health in August 2017. Kathy has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Education from Concordia College, Moorhead MN in 1983. After working in the business world for 20 years while volunteering as a local EMT. She followed her passion for healthcare and went back to school at South Dakota State University earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 2007, followed by a Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2013. She then began working for Avera Medical Clinic in Brookings SD in Acute Care and Internal Medicine before coming to Essentia Health in 2017. She also has taught at South Dakota State University and University of North Dakota in their graduate nursing programs for 13 years. Kathy has a strong passion for those struggling with Substance Use Disorders and has helped build and grow the program at Essentia Health in a manner that prevents stigma for this chronic health, treatable disease. Her business and education …background has been utilized on multiple committees at Essentia Health related to Substance Use Disorders. She is active in the Minnesota state Opioid Epidemic Response Advisory Council as an inaugural member since 2019, and currently Vice Chair. She has participated is several state and local committees related to overcoming the opioid epidemic in Minnesota including the Opioid Settlements and Opioid Prescribing for Chronic Pain workgroups. Kathy and the Essentia Health Walker clinic team received the 2020 West Value award for Respect. She has been trained in the Executive Leadership program through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, as well as the Leadership Improvement Foundational Training program at Essentia Health. She is passionate about seeing her patients live in recovery and succeed in achieving their goals, free from chemical dependency.
