Dr. Kearn D Hinchman, MD

After seeing Dr. Hinchman for a decent amount of time, I realized something was horribly off in the last year or so. I was prescribed a medication that is generally not used long term to treat my issue. After about a year and a half of being on the medication I started to experience the long term side effects. Memory loss, increased severe... debilitating anxiety, severe agoraphobia etc... and I found myself stuck in my home 7 days a week and had lost the ability to do once normal things like drive, shower without being supervised, going to work and being able to complete an entire day.. etc. my life has been completely ruined. Anytime I would convey these issues, he just upped the dosage, or put me on something else as well. I found a different physician who absolutely did not agree with the treatment and inquired as to why his treatment is only pills and never coupled with required therapy? Or why he will see you so infrequently while just making you a walking wreck on a controlled… substance? The most unnerving issue is that I was never made aware of the long term effects of the medication, and how dangerous and potentially deadly it is to titrate off of it. I would have never agreed to anything had I known how much it would ruin my life. I would take back every uncomfortable moment before being under his care, rather than live the quality of life I live now. I am so thankful I found a Doctor who cares, and is responsible. I mean, you can see the smoke coming off of his pen writing out your meds. He’s disinterested in any problems you might have, and just wants you out the door. Overmedicated and uneducated. Leaving you with the feeling that you’re just a broken person and will not live a decent life without his pills. There are no options for zero stars, but I wish there were. I would not recommend this doctor to my worst enemy, I’ve lost so many years to these pills I thought I needed, and it’s going to be a long hard road to regain who I once was. I’ve never felt so damaged, I’m a shell of the person I used to be. Emotionless, constantly terrified, unable to care for myself and void of essentially all independence. Based upon the other reviews- I am not the only one. He cannot continue to do this to people. It’s flat out just wrong. Avoid at all costs.

Do NOT go to this doctor. At one point I was on three or four meds. He changes doses all the time, switches out meds, and has patients stop and start new ones. My body chemistry felt off constantly. Totally not worth it. Go to someone more stable and compassionate.

I have gone to Dr. Hinchan for 18 years he is had me on every drug they have all I ever was was tired I spent nine years in bed I mean literally never ever want to go anywhere do anything I would eat take a nap taken have eat take a nap I just know that I had to push myself to do anything he had me on three or four different pills at a time and none of them were doing anything but put me to sleep I am so much better now I have 60 per cent better in the energy level where he never could get me any and that's just being off all the drugs that he had me on please don't go to this man. The doctor I go to now and she is more expensive than Dr. henchmen but at least she gets results you know I mean I spent so much money on that man and I was tired.

I called to set up a evaluation, she seemed nice up until I asked questions about cost, then she was very rude. I then got on the web and read horrible reviews about this doctor. I decided to keep looking. These doc offices have no idea how much a first impression can hurt them.especially when somone is looking for a therapist... its already nerve racking enough realizing you need one. Thumbs down

The doctor is very nice but the support staff is usually rude, and unpleasant to deal with even after seeing the doctor for over two years. They definitely talk down to clients

Dr. Hinchman seems to know his stuff but in my opinion he is way overpriced for the short time he spends with you. I feel he judges before he looks at the whole picture. His staff is not the friendliest especially Mary which happens to be his wife and office mgr she is very rude, cocky and has terrible communication skills. That office should have a trained RN in there doing callbacks not his secretary or office mgr. You are there for the patients and they come first.

Kearn Hinchman is the absolute worst psychiatric practitioner that I have ever seen in my entire life. He is arrogant, hateful, and will threaten to involuntary commit a patient at the drop of a hat. I was his patient for over two years, only bc psychiatrists are so few and hard to come by in the South Bend area. His misprescibes medications regularly. He is extremely judgemental. His office staff is unprofessional and careless. Neither he nor his office staff have any idea of the importance of patient confidentiality. He is quick to misdiagnose. Do not, under ANY circumstances, seek Kearn Hinchman for psychiatric (or any other) care.

Mary, who does the prior authorizations for the insurance companies is the rudest, most unprofessional human being I have ever met.

Misdiagnosis, not listening to the patient, etc. Just straight ego.

Dr. Hinchman is all about the newest, just-FDA-approved drugs, which is fine as a last resort, but there are medications that have been around for years that work very well that he just skips without explanation. One possible explanation is on openpaymentsdata.cms.gov, however, where I can see that he received $70 in "in-kind items and services" from the makers of the drug he just put me on, which I've noted he put me on for an off-label use. He has a reputation among counselors as an over-prescriber who medicates to counter side-effects of other medications. He is also arrogant about his diagnoses and gets upset when other doctors question them. He is very sure of himself, which seems wonderful at first, but should raise a red flag in a profession as subjective and uncertain as psychiatry. As much as we all want to be confidently told what is wrong, psychiatry is not precise and a person who can unequivocally diagnose you after one meeting should be treated cautiously. Ironically, he… is also one of the nicest and friendliest doctors I have ever known and I like him and enjoy my visits. He listens attentively and his explanations make sense. Every time I see him, I think he makes perfect sense, but then I walk out and think, "Wait a minute..." Many people have had great experiences, but if you want to see him, be an informed consumer and ask why he is choosing certain just-approved drugs before trying traditional and time-tested techniques. Ask why he chooses a particular diagnosis, and check whether or not the drug he prescribes is actually FDA approved FOR THE REASON HE IS PRESCRIBING IT or if he is prescribing "off-label" (for a different reason than what the drug is approved to treat). He can be a good doctor if you are willing to work with him and be an active participant in your own treatment, not just take everything he says at face value.
