Dr. Kenneth Newport Melman, MD

Very impressed with this specialist who combines an excellent bedside manner with a fine understanding of his area of expertise and the type of patient who would benefit from it.

I've been suffering from bipolar disorder for decades and have seen many psychiatrists in WA and CA. So far Melman has been one of the worst in his behavior towards me (and my family who brought me to treatments to his office). He's been rude to them and unwilling to discuss my treatment plan with them, and rude with me in disparaging and belittling my concerns about side-effects whenever he switches my medications (one too many times).

I am so surprised by the negative comments. This doctor saved my life and after fewer than the originally planned ECT treatments, he agreed/suggested I didn't need more. He treated me with respect, called my other physicians to encourage them to stop recommending more ECT instead of listening to me. During my initial appointment, he spent over two hours with me. I saw no signs of ego and he laughed so hard when I called his displayed diplomas and certificates his, "I love me wall." I adored this doctor and was sorry he wasn't available for actual counseling sessions because I have rarely found a psychiatrist/therapist so intuitive. Thanks to the care I received from him, I am very stable on my antidepressants and haven't even needed therapy sessions for over three years now.

Dr Melman has been one of the worst psychiatrists I've seen - I suffer from bipolar disorder, he kept insisting I have more TMS treatments even though they haven't worked in the past year or so,and since he has insisted on shock treatments vs try to adjust my meds. Be aware that Seattle-NTC is Dr Melman's own business (not a hospital, even though it's affiliated with Swedish). NCT provides TMS and shock treatments, that's how they make money, so you will get "suggestions" on getting those treatments, no matter how your condition fluctuates, again and again, despite your doubts, and Dr will dismiss them as he did mine.

He manages patients but doesn't treat and care about them beyond subscribing shock-treatments (which is how his business, SeattleNTC at Swedish, makes money). This isn't the doctor to see if you have doubts and are seriously considering having shock treatments , that's what he will recommend because his business depends on that! Go to an independent psychiatrist/practitioner for a non-biased evaluation and if you decide you need ECTs, Dr Melman is your provider,.

He is very self-absorbed. One of those psychiatrists that's probably crazier than most of his patients. Seems to care more about prestige than good care. He's also not all there, so to speak.

He didn't follow up with me even though i am a new patient and he just gave me medication for the first time. He didnt really explain my diagnosis either.
