Dr. Kevin J. Kaufman, MD, PhD

Education and Training:

Dr. Kevin J. Kaufman graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College after growing up in Ohio. He was awarded a Rotary Scholarship that enabled him to study physiology for one year at the Université de Paris, where his research focused on patients with vision disorders.

He earned both his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania through the National Institutes of Health Medical Scientist Research Program. His research concentrated on the physiology of eye-to-brain neural pathways in animal models. He later completed postdoctoral research at the Università degli Studi di Parma in Italy, where he continued investigating visual pathways.

Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship Training:

Dr. Kaufman completed his ophthalmology residency at Harvard’s Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. While at Harvard, he was selected for a Heed Fellowship in glaucoma. The following year, he received a Heed-Knapp Fellowship, which supported …additional glaucoma research at Harvard Medical School and Charles University in Prague.

During his time in Prague, he served as a National Academy of Sciences grantee, a Fulbright Professor, and a grantee of the American Philosophical Society. His international experience helped him achieve near fluency in French, Italian, and Czech. In recognition of his contributions, Charles University named him a Visiting Professor in 1995.

Clinical Expertise:

Dr. Kaufman maintains a balanced practice in glaucoma and comprehensive ophthalmology. He specializes in anterior segment eye disease and surgery, with an emphasis on small-incision cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and intraocular lens implantation.

His glaucoma care includes the full range of medical and surgical management, including:

• Filtering procedures
• Tube shunt devices
• Endocyclophotocoagulation

Professional Appointments:

Dr. Kaufman served as a Surgeon at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and is a Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as a consulting ophthalmologist for:

• Massachusetts General Hospital
• Brigham and Women’s Hospital
• Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
• Caritas Christi St. Elizabeth’s Hospital

Professional Memberships:

Dr. Kaufman is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He is also a member of:

• Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons
• New England Ophthalmological Society
