Dr. Kevin J. Kaufman graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College after growing up in Ohio. He was awarded a Rotary Scholarship that enabled him to study physiology for one year at the Université de Paris, where his research focused on patients with vision disorders.
He earned both his MD and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania through the National Institutes of Health Medical Scientist Research Program. His research concentrated on the physiology of eye-to-brain neural pathways in animal models. He later completed postdoctoral research at the Università degli Studi di Parma in Italy, where he continued investigating visual pathways.

His international experience helped him achieve near fluency in French, Italian, and Czech. In recognition of his contributions, Charles University named him a Visiting Professor in 1995.
