Dr. Kevin Michael Kelly, MD

I have worked with Dr. Kelly professionally and, even though our personal relationship is strained, I consider him to be one of the finest breast radiologists in the entire US (and I have worked with almost ALL of the finest breast radiologists in the US). I’m sorry the one patient was upset because her lump was not biopsied, but Dr. Kelly was probably right. The vast majority of breast lumps are not cancer and, if the imaging indicates no cancer, it almost always subjects the patient to unnecessary anxiety to biopsy such lumps. If I lived in LA I would definitely send my wife to Dr. Kelly.

Dr. Kelly identified my cancer which my University based Imaging Center missed with both annual mammograms and hand held ultrasound. They never advised me of my dense breast tissue and the percentage of mammogram failure associated. Thankfully I went the 100 plus mile trip and out of pocket costs to discover a cancer which would hav at least one more year to grow undetected. I have gone back after 3 years to determine that a mass is not cancer. It is radiation damage. SonoCine, Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound is superior, I am thankful I was able to find my cancer via that screening.

Even though I had been under Dr. Kelly's care for over 15 years with a history of breast lumps, he did NOT perform a needle biopsy on a 8 cm (walnut size) lump in my breast that had appeared in a matter of a few months. A needle biopsy or a core biopsy are the methods of diagnostics that sample the tissue. He performed a mammogram and an ultrasound which did not show cancer BUT HE LATER TOLD ME that 20 percent of the breast cancers cannot be detected on mammograms and ultrasounds. Despite this fact and the fact that I had a very large lump, HE DID NOT GET A SAMPLE OF THE TISSUE. HE TOLD ME I WAS FINE AND HE SENT ME AWAY. Finally, I went to a surgeon because I insisted on having more tests and it turned out to be cancer. I called Dr. Kelly and asked why he sent me away. It was at this point that he told me that 20 percent of the BC's are not detected by mammos and US's. I asked why he did not even just tell me that fact. AND, why didn't HE do the needle biopsy ? He said he'd… be doing them all day long if he tested every lump that he sees. Seems to me, that's what we women are hoping for ! The most aggressive testing possible. Had I trusted Dr. Kelly's medical expertise, I would not be typing this right now. Baring a miracle, I would be dead. Please do not see this man as your doctor.
