Dr. Kevin Wight Kiernan, MD

After some issues with health insurance reimbursement, I received a bill from Dr. Kiernan's office that they claimed was past due. I sent the check, called to confirm that his office received it and was told by the receptionist or billing clerk that everything was squared away... but they apparently "lost" the check and never reached out to me about it. More than a year later, Dr. Kiernan had it sent to collections and I was forced to pay lawyers fees AND interest on top of the full amount. I don't know if it was fraudulent or merely disorganization of their office, but I do not recommend.

I saw Dr. Kiernan for many years and have referred several friends to him who are also satisfied with his care. He has always been flexible and able to see me when I needed an appointment, and adjusted meds well. I am a health care provider so I didn't have many questions though.

I have seen him for approx. 4 1/2 year now as a patient. I personaly liked the walk in appts. in the beginning, nut when he changed them over, It was a little bit more of an inconvenience to get an appt. with him. But still not a problem. After all this time I come in for my regular visit and he says that he is cutting back and that this would be my last apt with hem and I would need to find someone else. I have been looking for a replacement for 3 months now because not many Dr.'s now will take Medicare, or they want you to pay out of pocket. I do know that all my bills were paid to him promptly and fully by my first and secondary insurance. Just not fair.

So many of these reviews are spot on. He seemed to not be paying attention or falling asleep during our 10 minute appointment. He forgot my name and my medical history which I would understand if you have a lot of patients it happens but obviously he doesn't prepare before seeing patients by at least glancing at their file. That concerns me because I am about to go in to get a refill for my medication and therefore, should be up to date before treating me. His office space is cluttered with papers, boxes and other junk and it is out of his basement which made it humid and smelled like mildew. I would not recommend him to anyone.

I saw Dr. Kiernan for about 4.5 years after the devastating loss of my wife to ALS. In one particularly difficult period he was very, very helpful and supportive I've read the reviews and have a couple of comments. First, I have found him to be empathetic and a good listener. I think his questions in the writing of prescriptions seem well positioned to elicit good information about the status of the treatment and the medication. He also monitored the length the dosage was taken and did prompt EKGs which are good. So I did NOT find an unfriendly, gruff, uncaring person. Quite the contrary. On the other hand, I do have empathy for the people who had to figure out the changing system of appointments, and the waiting room can be frustrating if you haven't figured out that the trick is to get there early especially near holidays or weekends. If you want to preserve your privacy, you definitely don't want that waiting room either -- that may be what is driving people a… bit nuts. He does take appointments for refills and that made things a lot easier. But there are probably good scheduling systems he could take advantage of to make his life and those of his patients easier.

Dr. Kiernan is a script doctor only concerned about money not patients wellbeing.

After going to this Doctor for over 2 years, he NEVER even remembered my name or showed an ounce of recognition when I would enter his office. I spent on average 5 minutes in his office for him to ask me "So how are things" "tell me about it", and then he'd write my prescription. I spent countless hours of my life waiting in his basement waiting room and barely a fraction of that time with the actual Dr. He recently finally changed to appointments,but can't bother to get a scheduling system. So you have to call, listen to the entirety of his lengthy voicemail, leave a message requesting an appointment and hope he calls you back in a few days. (Dr. Kiernan - they have free and easy to use scheduling systems - look into it. It will save you and your patients a great deal of time). I've heard him get in to at least two verbal confrontations with frustrated patients in his lobby (basement) and the one friend I recommended him to, complained of having a horrible experience. The worst part… for me was after 2 years of going, always making sure to get into my appointment on time because he "DOES NOT CALL IN" prescriptions, I called him needing help. I had relocated out of the area and couldn't get a new appointment for a few months and was almost out of my medication. I called and left a few messages and received a call a couple of days later. He said "first you have an outstanding bill, call my billing person and take care of that, and then we can talk about your medicaton". I was appalled. Knowing how difficult it is to get ahold of him, I asked if he could at least let me know what my options would be. He was rude and unhelpful, and advised that normally he doesn't call in prescriptions once someone has moved. Finally he let me know that I had the option of going to the emergency room in this situation. If my best and only option is to go to the emergency room, than fine, but I would appreciate if my doctor would advise me of that when I'm clearly worried and trying to take care of my health. Instead I had to press him to answer any questions because he was mostly concerned about me taking care of my bill. I called the billing department (he couldn't even give me the phone number while I was on the phone with him, instead he had me call back and listen to his voicemail in order to get the number). When I reached the billing person she told me I did not have an outstanding balance and the my account was in good standing. This Doctor disorganized and does not care about his patients.

Will keep you waiting usually more than 10-15 minutes. Extremely difficult to get in contact with. His mode of diagnosis is to take out the DSM-IV, ask yes or no questions about symptoms, and begin prescribing. Nothing exceptional once you are finally in the office with him. Competent. Fine if you're in a pinch, need someone in network, and can easily travel to from work or home. Otherwise, if money and time are not a constraint, keep searching.

I agree with the other posts - oddest man, confrontational, abrupt, rude, uncaring, looked like he was was nodding off while I was telling him my medical background, poor listener, seemed agitated that he had to deal with patients. His chosen field doesn't seem like a good fit for him.

I spent two hours in his windowless basement that smelled of mildew and was cramped with not enough seats for everyone. He doesn't take appointments so there was a lot of confusion in the waiting room of whose turn it was. I spent less than 10 minutes with the doctor. He was highly rude and uncharasmatic. I'll be looking for another psychiatrist!!!
