Dr. Kevin Charles Lutta, MD

My experience with Dr. Lutta was excellent. I had a left peroneal tendon repair, which I had delayed for some time. Dr. Lutta was very clear and specific in explaining the procedure, and it was evident that he is highly skilled. He worked efficiently to schedule the surgery, and the outcome was very positive. I have minimal scarring, no complications, and my recovery progressed well by following his instructions. I’m truly grateful and trust his care. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking professional surgical care. His attention to recovery is just as important as the procedure itself.

Dr. Kevin C. Lutta changed my life and saved me from amputation... 20 years ago I had a botched surgery preventing me from walking after I broke the Talus Dome (sits between the ankles above the heel) in half in my right foot. After multiple corrective surgeries and 5 years I was finally able to walk again with a cane, and drive, though my foot would never lift up or turn to the right again. I remained in this condition for 13 years, and was informed that I only had 3 options available to me. They could fuse my ankle, amputate, or I could live with daily dislocations and the constant pain until medical technology came up with a new option for me. I had it checked out every couple of years with several Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgeons to no avail. 2 years ago the technology advanced and I was reffered to Dr. Lutta who performed a 3D Printed Total Ankle and Total Talus Replacement. While he was doing this he rebuilt the Malleolus Head of the Tibia (which I had ground away with daily… dislocations) and he repaired a fracture to my Fibula. During the 18 years leading to this surgery all of the muscles that control the foot's ability to move up or to the right had atrophied 100%. For a couple of years leading up to this surgery, my foot could not even lift to a neutral position. The tendons and ligaments had shortened, so he also lengthened my Achilles Tendon. I was informed that if I was not a candidate for this procedure I would be an amputee within 6 months, as Avascular Necrosis had set into the Talus Dome and the bone was dying. Dr. Lutta informed me before the surgery that I would have a more difficult time learning to walk again than an infant does because of the atrophied muscles, but that if I stuck with it I would walk normally again. I truly appreciate the honesty as it gave me a realistic sense of my recovery journey. It has been 2 years now and that may seem like a ling time, but compared to the 18 years prior or living the rest of my life as an amputee it is really no time at all. I have a few more months of PT, but I am walking (short distances) with no brace, cane, or crutches and able to drive short distances. Freedom is right around the corner and I LOVE MY NEW ANKLE! I am surprised by the number of positive reviews for both this practice and for Dr. Kevin Lutta. After a four-month saga, my husband endured, we both recommend people steer clear of this practice and Dr. Lutta. My husband went in to have heel pain assessed in summer of 2021 and was diagnosed with a cyst in his heel bone. Dr. Lutta was recommended to him and he was scheduled for a surgery to have the cyst removed and bone graft inserted. This fairly simple procedure was offered as a conventional solution to his pain with about a six-week healing timeframe. From the get-go, it was a nightmare. His nerve pain wasn’t managed, resulting in an ER visit on his first night after the surgery. Trying to get a callback from Dr. Lutta’s emergency line was stressful with my husband wailing in the background. When he did call back, we were informed that he must have a low pain tolerance. In fact, it took three doses of opioids to get his pain under control…. Pain that could have easily been managed… by an anti-inflammatory, which Dr. Lutta prescribed after the fact. Two weeks later, after good progress and weaning off of painkillers, he was experiencing intense pain and had to return to his painkillers. The office showed NO urgency in getting him in despite these warning signs and scheduled him for two days later. I had to call the office and fight for a next day appointment. Turns out he had developed an infection. They ran tests and sent him home with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. We were again scheduled to see Dr. Lutta days a couple days later. By that time, my husband was physically ill, feverish, and in pain. Dr. Lutta stated the obvious “he has an infection,” and tried to send him home again. Again, I had to fight the staff on this and Lutta agreed I should take him to the ER. He was admitted for 6 days for his infection and finally we got another infectious disease doctor onboard for his care. He also needed a second surgery. His infection that was blatantly ignored (after a BONE SURGERY) resulted in not only all this, but another six weeks of home care, a PICC line to deliver his IV antibiotics, and thousands of dollars in additional bills to get him well again. We are incredibly lucky that he is still here and now healthy. An infection after bone surgery is nothing to fool around with and Ortho Virginia disregarded our concerns at every intersection of this process. We filed a complaint with the office, but of course, never heard back. Countless times, in the office, we have had to remind staff to wear gloves and wash hands prior to handling my husband’s wound care because of the active infection he experienced. In fact, at his level of complication, I’m not even sure why Ortho Virginia would have Med techs involved in his care at any level. I would RUN from this practice. It seems that if your issue is cut and dry without any complications, maybe your experience is fine, but we kept hearing how rare my husband’s conditions were and my response to that is: rare does not mean it’s not happening and it took a lot of kicking and screaming to get someone in that office to really listen and not dismiss what was going on with him. We are incredibly lucky he has made a full recovery. I still come back and share this story because I’ll never forget the nightmare of almost losing my husband to the incompetence of this man, his staff, and the entire Ortho Virginia practice… who still to this day never did a thing in response to my complaints I filed with their administration.

Dr Lutta access by broken toe aligned it Xrayed it and realigned it to get it right. No pain after the numbing agent wore off.

Dr. Kevin is not a good surgeon at all. Please don’t let him operate on anyone in your family. My daughter went in for a bone spur operation with Dr. Lutta and that surgery was a complete success. But while he was in my daughter’s foot, he nicked my daughter’s tendon. He did not admit that he cut my daughter’s tendon immediately but after my daughter had an ultrasound done, then Dr. Lutta admitted that he cut her tendon during the initial first surgery. Then he tried two other times to reattach my daughter’s tendon, now my daughter is in the hospital with a foot infection and major pain from two extra surgeries that should not have happened all because of Dr. Lutta. For anyone, please get another surgeon but not Dr. Lutta.

Treated my wife very unprofessionally, seemed he felt threatened that she was consulting podiatrists (2nd opinion) and told her she was seeing too many doctors. Didn’t seem to address real problem or pain. Do not recommend him. Poor bedside manner.
