Dr. Kevin Thomas Mcvary, MD

I saw Dr. McVary to discuss treatment options for an elevated PSA. He told me I "broke" the glass" with my PSA score and the only option was a biopsy. I pointed to SIU's own research on other diagnostic aids to that would support a biopsy decision or not. He said my insurance wouldn't pay for these so there was no reason to have additional testing. I checked before I went in and my insurance would cover these tests and regardless, testing should be a patient decision no matter who pays. He seemed offended. He also cautioned me about doing any research on the internet.

Dr. McVary is great. But his support staff, nurses leave a lot to be desired. They don't return messages no matter how many messages you leave or no matter how urgent the issue is. I have changed to a new doctor.

My father-in-law's PSA doubled in 6 months. His then urologist told him to wait it out and not to worry. I immediately cried foul and called Dr. McVary. Having previously worked with McVary regarding his research I knew he was the man for a second opinion. He immediately got us in and after a test quickly discovered that my father-in-law had an aggressive form of prostate cancer. Surgery was scheduled within a couple of weeks. While my father-in-law lost his prostate he gained his life. Had he waited as his previous doctor recommended his cancer would have spread to vital organs. Thanks to Dr. McVary my father-in-law is healthy and happy and 12 years cancer free!

I took my father in law to his office for prostate cancer. It was a 3 hours drive for us so we were plenty anxious. Surgery was recommmended and we sought a 2nd and third opinion as the samplings weren't terribly high. However, everyone agreed with Dr. McVary and one surgeon even told me that he recommended Dr. McVary to perform the surgery. So we did and he has been great. I am recommending him to an employee of ours who has a similar problem and in so doing, I called the office and they were able to get him in promptly as his initial diagnosis was emergent. Great doctor, great bedside manner and great follow-up. I recommend to all in Western Illinois!

I have a prostate problem and this doctor really helped. He showed real compassion and skill. I would send any family or friend to him that wants a good doctor.

I came for second opinion about cancer of my prostate. He took time and explained alot of options. I saw another MD to hear what he said and it was basically the same. I am waiting to decide what to do and he was OK with it saying there was no rush orivided I am monitored. I appraciated his tone and concern. I would send my family and friends to him

Dr. McVary might be a decent doctor but from my experience he is little more than a saleman for having your prostate removed. After my biopsy I got a call from him informing me cancer was found in my biopsy. he used the word cancer about 8 times during the phone call. My wife and I scheduled a office visit. during the visit the sales pitch was even at a higher pitch. He tried scaring us, which he did at the time, Told us "not to look on the internet" because there are "too many conspiracy theries out there". And wanted an answer as to our choice of treatment. When I told him I was still deciding he says: "if you decide against surgery I will send you a registered letter informing you of your mistake and recuse myself as your doctor"After checking my biopsy with other practicioners I found out that cancer was found in 2% of one sample out of 12!Certainly a case for watchful waiting consideration. My advise is don't go to him.
