Dr. Kimberly Alyssa Schrage, MD

My son was scheduled for a fasting ultrasound yesterday at a medical center outside of our service area, since there wasn’t an appointment available in our service area. His physician wanted this done as soon as possible because of gastrointestinal issues he had been experiencing. Even though he was no longer experiencing obvious symptoms, based on findings from the ultrasound my son was admitted to ER for further testing, where he was attended to by Dr. Schrage. I initially perceived Dr. Schrage as friendly, however she quickly exhibited patronizing behavior, with her demeanor conveying that my questions were an annoyance and an imposition on her time. After consulting with the specialist, Dr. Schrage let me know what test had been ordered for my son. When I asked her for information on an alternative test that is sometimes recommended, Dr. Schrage pointedly corrected my pronunciation of the test and dismissed my sources of information. She went on to say that she couldn’t give me any… more information, that she just orders what the doctor tells her to and doesn't question it. When I asked if I could speak with the specialist before proceeding, she informed me that wasn’t possible. After the test results were reviewed, Dr. Schrage informed me that the specialist recommended that my son be admitted directly for removal of his gallbladder the next day. Dr. Schrage acknowledged she was not able to answer my resulting questions and offered to connect me via her phone with the surgeon who would be performing the surgery. As she was aware, my son is autistic, suffers extreme anxiety, had been in the ER for 9 hours without eating since the night before, and would not be able to eat until after surgery the next day, which could potentially be late afternoon, but wasn’t even guaranteed. Naturally, I had many questions to help advocate for my son’s physical and mental health, as well as to plan for care for another autistic child at home. Apparently I took too long gathering information to assess the feasibility and risks of the other options presented by the surgeon, because Dr. Schrager cut our conversation short, after informing us that she needed her phone so that she could attend to other patients. She further stated that she was ‘doing me a favor’ by letting me speak with the surgeon who was recommending imminent, unanticipated surgery for my son. As a review on another site states, she is unprofessional and has a poor bedside manner.
