ACL reconstruction flawlessly executed. Excellent surgeon

I was an SEC Champion, I was a National Champion, I was an elite level collegiate athlete... and then I had a career ending injury... After I broke my foot, i went all around the country looking for the most qualified doctors. I was living in Texas at the time. The university surgeon was sure that he could fix the problem. However, I was not convinced that he could handle this. (having seen another team mates career end after this same surgery). We searched and asked everybody we knew for recommendations and somehow we found our way back up to Kansas City. The team and I shopped around looking for doctors and then I met Dr. McCullough. He was SO MUCH BETTER compared to every other surgeon we had met (I had traveled to Texas, Oklahoma City & Finally Kansas City). He changed the game. He we enthusiastic, a total "go getter", and he made me excited to have the surgery. Not to mention, he too was a college athlete and understood what was going through my psyche as an athlete. Above… all else, he was the most confident. Not only was the surgery a success, I was able to finish my last season with little issues. He stayed very close with me, answering every question, staying in constant contact with the doctors at Texas A&M University. I do not think you can find a doctor that cares and understand his athletes more than Dr. Kirk. He goes above and beyond in all aspects of his job. I am very lucky to have found him.

I tore my left distal bicep at work and was referred to Dr. McCullough by a friend. It was my first major injury and both my work and lifestyle were heavily impacted by the injury. Things were very uncertain. From the moment I first met Dr. McCullough, I felt at ease and encouraged by the road ahead. He seemed genuinely concerned about my situation and assured me that things would get back to normal after surgery and PT (if I put in the work). 12 Months later I feel like I am in the best shape of my life. The initial diagnosis and uncertainty a major surgery provides can be very scary. Dr. McCullough and his entire staff were helpful, encouraging, professional and top-notch. The surgery was excellent and recovery began immediately and I would be confident in referring anyone to Dr. McCullough for their needs. I can't say enough positive things about my experience with Dr. McCullough and the team at the Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Clinic of Kansas City. Thanks for making this… seemingly huge moment, a minor bump in the road.

The purpose of this letter is to express my gratitude to Dr. Kirk McCullough and his staff for how they treated my painful, arthritic ankle. My ankle had become so painful that I had difficulty walking even short distances. For someone who has spent most of his 75 years being very active (run, hike, bike, golf), something had to be done. Initially, I consulted two ankle specialists in the Kansas City area. One suggested ankle replacement and the other (Dr. McCullough) suggested fusion. I selected the latter for several reasons. First, Dr. McCullough’s approach was more conservative and his explanation for that conservatism made sense to someone who spends most of his time managing risk. Second, the physical therapists and members of the medical community I know gave Dr. McCullough an A+ rating. Third, his assessment of my current range of ankle motion suggested that even after surgery, I would not notice much difference in how I walk or ride a bike because I had already learned how… to compensate for the lack of motion. His assessment was right on target. Today, five months post fusion surgery, I ride my bike and play golf without pain. Mission accomplished. The members of Dr. McCullough’s staff were also exceptional, from the nurses and x-ray technicians to the assistants who fitted me with boots and braces. I highly recommend Dr. McCullough. I was referred to him by a foot/ankle care clinic, since I had a complete tear of my right Achilles tendon with complications. This was my first major injury (and surgery) so I was anxious about it, but I could tell that Dr. McCullough genuinely cared about helping me recover, and that he was very knowledgeable in the type of surgery that he recommended for me, which was a 'mini-open'. His confident, calm manner and expert knowledge put me at ease. Dr. McCullough is an extremely skilled surgeon, and I am very thankful for everything he’s done for me throughout my surgery and recovery. I strongly recommend Dr. McCullough to anyone in need of orthopedic surgery or medical care.

Dr. McCullough has been very professional, a good listener and provided thorough explainations before agreeing to perform surgery on my torn Achilles’ tendon. As an older patient (80) I appreciated his assessment of the pros and cons of surgery for me. Fortunately my active life style seemed to be in favor of surgery. Today, after 3 1/2 months he determined that my tendon is healed and I am to continue exercises to strengthen my leg but also return to normal activities without restriction.

My experience with Dr. McCullough has made my foot surgery and recovery go very smoothly. I came to him from out of state by a recommendation from my head athletic trainer. I was in a very tough situation because I was receiving interest from NFL teams and I was just not in the right state of mind because I had to get surgery and miss the draft, mini camp, and I am going to miss training camp. I can tell you this though, Dr. McCullough has been by my side the whole road to recovery since I left his surgery room. He will go the extra mile to make sure you are on top of your recovery by staying in contact with you and he is always available for questions. I would highly recommend him to anyone not just athletes because he is a great doctor, but an even better person.

Dr. McCullough helped me a lot with two complicated surgeries. He has done a great job at explaining the situation to me, and at being available to me during the whole process of recovery. Being a college athlete, these surgeries were crucial to me, and I’m grateful Dr. McCullough was the one in charge. I would highly recommend him to anyone I know!

I came to Dr. McCullough for a 2nd opinion on a complicated shoulder injury. He and his staff could not have provided a better experience. Yes, you may have a long wait to see him, but the care you will receive is well worth it. A major factor in his clinical delays is his patient-centered approach to treatment. He actually listens to your concerns, and then presents all of the options available to help you make an informed decision that is best for you and your needs. Dr. McCullough has a calming presence that will reassure you in your decision. Surgically, the guy is gifted. Dr. McCullough performed a procedure that restored my shoulder to a condition I didn't think was possible and has allowed me to return to my previous activities with little to no impairment and full confidence in the repair. I received multiple follow up calls in the days following my procedure to check how I was doing. It is obvious that he and his team take great pride in the work they do. His 5-star rating… on this site is well-deserved and I will be seeing him for any ortho needs in the future.
