Dr. Kirk H Young

Dr. Young is very knowledgeable and has kept my gums in good shape. His staff is pleasant, capable, and good natured.

I picked Dr. Young after doing the usual net research. I assumed he'd be a regular good periodontist who'd simply pick up where my previous periodontist had left off but I really was fortunate that he was much much better than I ever could have expected. I have periodontal disease and on my first visit he, not his dental hygienist, did the pocket measurements and cleaning. My previous periodontist basically just did the exam and a special proceedure on me that failed, while just supervising his hygienist who, as it turned out, didn't do adequate cleanings and gum pocket measurements. Dr. Young measured my gum pockets and discovered they were worse than previously measured. Next, Dr. Young gave me the root and scale planning which is a special proceedure that, I gather, most with periodontal disease need at least once. It cleanse out all the bacteria and gunk on the teeth especially below the gum line. He did not farm this out to his dental hygenist like my previous… periodontist. Dr. Young is one of the few, if not only, periodontists that, if needed, will do a special bacteria culture test in which he painlessly takes a bacterial sample from the gums by the upper back teeth, then sends it to the only lab in America, in San fransisco, that does this test, which tells how many of the 12 types of bacteria that those with periodontal disease typically have in their mouths. On the first test, I had 5 out of 12 including one of the serious ones that was indicative of heart disease. They were taken care of with an 8 day prescription of antibiotics. When we did the same test 2 years later, all I had were a few of the less severe ones and so there was no need for more antibiotics. Dr. Young takes-checks gum pocket measurements at every exam-cleaning appointment and if, as in my case, if any of the pocket depths are measured at 4mm or more, then he will do the cleaning until the measurements get back to the proper 1mm-3mm range. He is appropriately aggressive against periodontal disease but only does what is truly necessary. I know that finding Dr. Young was just as significant and even more so than having a multi million dollar lottery ticket. If I hadn't had the grand fortune to have found him, my teeth, definitely, and perhaps my overall health, would have been a sad mess by now. His receptionist staff are also wonderful and kind. I only lived in the Jacksonville, Orange Park area for 6 months back in 2011, but iam still his patient. Every 3 months I drive Hundreds of miles, round trip, to see him for the check up and cleaning appointment. I leave around 8am, get there around 1:40pm, have a quick lunch, have the appointment at 3pm, leave around 4:30pm and I am home around 11pm. That's how much I value, appreciate and trust Dr. Young and his entire staff of dental hygenists and receptionists. I know I am getting the best care one could receive by going to him.
