Dr. Kristin Curtis Herman, MD

Dr Herman has directly interfered with my daughter’s treatment. She has horrible bedside manner. She first saw my daughter several years ago where she convinced me that testing for EDS or Marfans or any other connective tissue disease is pointless because a diagnosis doesn’t change anything because there is no treatment. That was early in our journey to a diagnosis and I accepted her professional opinion. That’s something I later have come to deeply regret. Fast forward 4 years and my daughter’s health has declined. She has been to multiple specialist. It’s highly affected her quality of life. Her Endocrinologist did an eval and beighton test and said she is definitely hypermobile and said he believed she had EDS and referred her to back to Herman. Ask for a different MD if you find that Kristin Curtis Herman is your doctor! Avoid her at all costs. She is rude, dismissive, and argumentative, and she holds some bizarre and false beliefs about hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I left both my virtual and in-person appointments in tears. She made me feel like I had to defend and prove my personal experience. She argued with me and interrupted me when I tried to answer her questions. She also provided no instruction or explanation during the physical examination and bent my fingers, hands, and arms back without warning. During our appointments, she stated that (and I quote)"Hypermobility or hyperextension does NOT cause pain." She also stated, "People with hEDS do not have flare-ups. You stated you have flare-ups, and that is not consistent with the symptomology of hEDS." Obviously, this is wildly incorrect. I waited a year for my appointment with her and she spent at most 2-minutes physically examining me. I wasted a year… waiting for answers just to have her dismiss me, mistreat me, and not complete the physical examination correctly. I'm on the cusp of meeting the criteria and I very well might not have hEDS. Unfortunately, I'm no closer to knowing whether I do or don't have hEDS because Dr. Herman's professional opinion is questionable at best. This person should NOT be working with patients who deal with chronic pain- or people in general. She's an all-around unpleasant person. She is actively causing harm, as you can see from the previous 2 reviews. This is clearly a pattern of behavior. Her "findings" from my 2-minute examination were false, incomplete, and inaccurate. Avoid Dr. Herman! She is biased and cruel. Ask for another doctor. Someone who will spend time with you, listen to you, and conduct themselves compassionately and professionally. Dr. Herman is, unfortunately, incapable.

I was previously diagnosed with EDS and well met the 2017 criteria for hEDS. My Beighton score was 7 out of 9. Next I had to rule out rarer forms of EDS. So I waited a year to see the geneticist at UC Davis. When I finally was able to see her, she told me that before someone even walks into her office, she decides that they don't have EDS. Then she proceeded to discount the positive criteria I met for hEDS according to the 2017 diagnosis criteria. She strangely accused me of stretching daily in order to meet the hypermobility test, umm... nope. She recorded "Normal" on the visit report that she did not even look at, like my spine. Or my scars. Very weird and upsetting. Thought she would be supportive, I was so wrong. I felt gaslit and confused, so upsetting. She was unscientific and negatively biased to finding EDS. So incredibly frustrating. I saw a different doctor, an actual EDS specialist recommended by the EDS Society and am now officially diagnosed with hEDS.

I've never had a doctor experience so weird. I went to her for an hEDS genetic testing. From the go, Dr.Herman was a bit rude. No problem, it happens. Then she started asking me repeatedly and aggressively if I had joint pain. I kept saying YES. Then at the end of our app, she says she doesn't think I have hEDS, because I DON'T have joint pain?!? More importantly, joint pain is NOT in the diagnosis criteria whatsoever- she didn't refer to accepted criteria at all. After that she told me that "getting a diagnosis doesn't help." WHAT! I started crying but she only doubled down. So weird and a terrible, soul-crushing experience.

Our appointment with Dr. Herman turned out better than I hoped. We arrived and only waited about 10 minutes before we were called back. We actually went there for my son and she was able to isolate a genetic issue running through my side of the family. She was very thorough and gave us a lot of answers.
