Dr. Kurt S Black, DDS

I have been a patient of Dr. Black for 5 years and I always have an excellent experience while at his office. His staff is terrific (and it's always the same staff which says something about the doctor), Dr. Black is a through clinician, he has the most up-to-date technology and the spa amenities are icing on the cake for making my visit comfortable and soothing. I may pay less going somewhere else but I'm interested in keeping my teeth for a lifetime and I'm confident that Dr. Black is going to help me do this.

I felt I needed to post this review to warn others of the practices of this office. Let me start out by saying I hadn't been to a dentist in many years as my previous long time dentist had retired. Because of this, I needed a number of things done to "catch up" on my dental care. I went in for an initial exam with Dr Black's office including full X-rays resulting in suggestions of items that needed done and a line item list of costs. Sure, I hadn't been to a dentist in quite some time, but the numbers seemed quite high. Also, the services needed warranted a second opinion anyway as I wasn't so sure about them. I just felt funny as a result of the visit... I then inquired some more at many other offices and found out that Dr Black's rates were consistently between ***** 40% and 120% HIGHER *****!!!! After a few more calls I was told that there is a "Oregon standard pricing" that about 90% of Dentists in the state follow or use as a guide. Dr Black's office is NOT ONE OF THEM! In… addition to this, they have some kind of proprietary "insurance" they offer that is only good in their office????? Hhmmmmm, you have to wonder about that one? I also had some services on that list that another dentist could not justify or even see why he was going to work on a particular tooth. I feel that Dr Black's exam and suggestions were rushed and "sold". Summary; this office is not a "bad" office if you have really good insurance which few do anymore... AND you only need basic services that don't warrant second opinions. As others have said, they have a very modern office with all the latest stuff, but the cost is over the top if you compare to other dental providers. 1.4 to 2.2 times over the average cost is NOT a FAIR practice. I was being "sold" on the questionable "payment plan - proprietary ins" thing. I was seriously overcharged for my X-rays and exam. I was sold on services I didn't need. I will never go back to this office!
