Dr. L. Kaleb Friend, MD, specializes in pediatric orthopaedic surgery with an emphasis on sports-related injuries. After graduating magna cum laude from University of Southern California, he attended the USC Keck School of Medicine. He then completed a surgical internship at Baylor and a research internship in pediatric orthopeadics at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. He spent the majority of his residency at Tulane, and transferred to Albert Einstein School of Medicine for his chief resident year. He also completed a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Friend is an avid rock-climber and hiker, and enjoys skiing, cycling, and photography. His goal as an orthopaedic surgeon is to get his patients better faster, and get them back out on the soccer field, the basketball court, the ski slope, or the dance floor.

The problem was with billing. I am a physician and understand medical billing, however, charging $822 to tell my daughter with a broken collarbone to stay in the sling is NUTS!!!! That is maybe worth my $30 copay for an office-visit but billing like this is crazy. I have very good insurance but still had to pay $280. I couldn't get anyone in billing to call me back either despite several messages left.

Dr. Friend did an open reduction, rodding, and plating of my son's forearm bones. Nine days after my son had the rod removed from his arm, my son broke his wrist! Dr. Friend checked it out at our follow-up from the surgery, and Dr. Friend explained the scaphoid fracture issues carefully and wonderfully. My son, who has autism, always felt comfortable around Dr. Friend because he was patient, kind, and explained things so thoroughly. We are sad that Dr. Friend has left Children's Hospital Oakland, but any practice (and patient) is lucky to have Dr. Friend.

Dr, Friend is a phenomenal doctor who really knows his craft. He is a perfectionist who strives to give his patients the best care possible. He is very straightforward and easy to talk too. He made my son feel very comfortable about his ACL reconstruction surgery. Afterwards he made sure my son received all of the necessary rehabilitation care needed for a full recovery. I couldn't ask for a better doctor/surgeon.

Dr. Friend is a very good doctor who takes his time in the operating room. He really made me feel comfortable about my daughters surgery.
