Dr. Virginia "Ginger" Powell grew up in Gulfport, Mississippi. She attended college at Mississippi State University where she majored in science and graduated summa cum laude. She attended dental school at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) where she also graduated with honors. She then did a general practice residency in Chicago, IL at Michael Reese Hospital an affiliate of the University of Chicago. After this residency she taught operative dentistry at Northwestern University where she was recruited by the University of Washington. At the University of Washington Dr. Powell taught and researched dental caries and dental restorations. Her research papers have been published in national and international dental journals. She retired at the level of full professor in 2000. Throughout her academic career Dr. Powell maintained a practice in general dentistry.
Dr. Powell moved to Ukiah in 2000 to take advantage of the quality of life offered by a smaller …community. She has one daughter, Amelia, who graduated from Ukiah High School in 2009. Her husband, Scott Hegan, is a local glass artist. Her hobbies include reading, hiking, yoga, and travel. She sponsors various soccer clubs, and contributes to a variety of local organizations.
