Dr. Larry Ray Hunefeld, MD

Excellent doctor who tends to do a lot of duties at the hospital so you might end up seeing his nurse practitioner which is generally the case. However, the nurse practitioner is very knowledgeable about serious conditions that I have faced the past few years and helped to get things going in the right direction. Easy to get appointments but they do expect you to be a responsible adult and show up for your appointments or at least call a day or two in advance if you cannot make your appointment. Very reasonable in their approach since they have a large patient caseload to deal with. Courteous and friendly staff who is good at sending out letters and reminders of office visits and good follow up in regard to issues. Easy to contact via their patient portal and communicate with the provider. Could use a little more of the regular doctor around the office but he does a lot of work at the nearby hospital so has his knowledgeable nurse practitioner handle these issues. I will say though… that she is one of the better nurse practitioners I have seen around over the past 10 years or so. Always trying to find a way to diagnose a problem and provide a workable solution or giving a referral to a specialist that you might need. Really has helped me a lot in getting things going the right direction after years of poor health. Nothing really bad to say about this practice as they do care about their patients from what i have seen an experienced personally.

Doctor Hunefeld is a pretty good doctor when you get to see him in person. However, he relies too much on his nurse practitioner who doesn't always know what to do with ongoing medical issues that are probably something a bit outside of her training. I will say that the NP is very knowledgeable on a wide variety of medical issues but sometimes I think she doesn't have enough training and probably overworked to know as much as needed or needs to consult the doctor a bit more. I've been a patient for about two years and he relies way too much on his medical staff in his practice either because he is overworked with his other duties. Seems to be not enough communication between the doctor and his NP and staff. I will say that the office staff have been generally pleasant for the most part although there is one woman in that office with a bit of a grumpy attitude when it comes to concerns and getting things right. Haven't had any problems getting appointments and they being a… high volume office taking Medicaid and other patients are rather strict about appointment times. However, if you can't make your appointment give them notice and they will reschedule you with decent amount of notice. Why some people cannot make their appointments on time is beyond me but some people have excuses for everything. Nurse practictioner is generally easy to deal with and pleasant personality which helps just needs to consult the doctor a bit more and communication to fix problems. The best thing is to be your own advocate and if you think something is wrong then tell her and be forceful about it. Overall I would recommend going there and as far as the previous poster goes about Scott County, is that Scott County overall has a lot of medical problems from prescription drug abuse and other socioeconomic problems that need to be addressed.

Was a patient there for almost a year and never saw the doctor only the Nurse practitioners and they were rude. They discriminate if you live in Scott County. They think everyone is a drug abuser regardless of diagnosis. They do not give referrals. When asked why I was told they just dont. They don't take their time always in a rush to get out. If you are on medicaid you are treated differently. Was over all not a good experience and I finally had to switch to a doctor located out of Scott County.

Worst Office Staff I have ever dealt with. Unnecessary wait times for what should be easy paperwork. Unhelpful staff over the telephone. Complete case of "left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing" Quality of care is good, if you can get past the incompetence, bad attitude and insensitivity of the office staff.
