Dr. Lawal A. Labaran, MD

Dr. Lawal A. Labaran is a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon specializing in minimally invasive spine surgery, adult and pediatric spinal deformity correction, cervical spine disorders, and evidence-based spine care. Dr. Labaran practices at OrthoIllinois, where he provides comprehensive surgical and non-surgical treatment for complex spinal conditions affecting the neck and back.

Dr. Labaran completed his Bachelor of Science degree with Magna Cum Laude honors at Chicago State University before earning his medical degree (MD) from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine. He subsequently completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the prestigious University of Virginia Health System, Department of Orthopedic Surgery in Charlottesville, Virginia.

To further refine his expertise in spinal surgery, Dr. Labaran pursued an advanced 1-year Adult and Pediatric Comprehensive Spine Fellowship at Columbia University in New York City, training under leading spine …surgery specialists Dr. Lawrence Lenke and Dr. Daniel K. Riew, in one of the nation’s premier academic medical centers.

During a dedicated research fellowship at the University of Virginia Health System, Dr. Labaran specialized in quantifying gait improvements and functional outcomes in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM). His research focused on biomechanical analysis and objective outcome measurements in spine surgery patients. A pivotal clinical experience involving a Nurick grade IV CSM patient who achieved remarkable functional recovery following surgical intervention solidified Dr. Labaran’s commitment to spine surgery as a specialty capable of dramatic functional restoration, not merely symptomatic management.
