Dr. Lawrence Eric Kanter, MD

I had a pretty straight forward case, I needed pain management until I received surgery in two months time. I saw Dr. Kanter twice, the first time he prescribed me a medicine that was ineffective. I went back to see him and he again tried to prescribe me a drug in the same class that was ineffective, I asked when this new medicine would take effect he told me two months. I told him the point of me being here is to elevate my pain until my surgery. He responded that this is the policy he follows. Meaning he showed no signs of sympathy or care for my pain. I ended up never picking up the script from him and finding another doctor. In my experience, if you need pain management stay away from Dr. Kanter.

Arrogant know-it-all who has no business being in any sort of medical practice. Avoid this person at all costs.

After waiting for over a month for a spinal steroid injection this procedure proved to be ineffective for pain reliief. The primary reason for choosing this group was sedation during procedure as I had experienced pain during previous epidurals. Considering returning to a non-sedation prodecedure if it yields relief and not this group!

I usually see Dr. Chen, who is wonderful. He was on vacation and I was forced to see Dr. Kanter. He didn't listen to anything I said and gave me medication that did not work. When I called in, he gave me another presciption for pain medication that didn't work either. So, I called again and I asked him why he did not prescibe me the pain medication that I had taken in the past and knew worked (I got that medication there, so they had a record of it). He told me that I said I did not want to take that medication any longer!!?? I was shocked and told him I never said that and told him, now I have wasted hundres of dollars on medication that doesn't work. His answer "well, I cannot control the price of medication" and still insisted I told him not to prescribe the medication which worked in the past....unbelievable. He is arrogant, a know it all, and non-caring individual (I can't even classify him as a doctor). If you go to him after reading this, you are going at your own risk. He was… the worst so called "doctor" I have ever been to see.Although, I would endorse Dr. Chen, I cannot in good faith recommend Dr. Kanter to anyone.

Following a MVA, I was treated by Dr. Kanter for close to a year and a half. During this time, I was placed on meds and he performed a variety of painful joint and epidural injections and radio frequency. After 18 months with no improvement, I consulted with many other doctors who were shocked that no nerve tests were done prior to the injections. I was sent to a teaching facility in NY where on first visit I had a diagnosis of genetic joint diseases. 1 visit at a stellar hospital vs. 18 months with miserable doctor. I'll take the 1 visit. The NY doctor was horrifed at the number of procedures done and that Dr. Kanter did not catch on quick enough.

This guy just flat out doesn't care. The staff was nice enough, but, he seems like he's got somewhere to be soon and you're just an annoyance. I'm looking for another pain management doctor. Take my word for it, don't go see him and if you are, fire him and get a doctor that gives a crap.

Dr. Kanter doesn't care if you find relief or not. I believe he's more interested in weeding out those that want drugs (a fine goal) than trying to help. In 6 months, he's tried every 'nerve blocker' in varying dosages in the book. After such a long time, I posed the question to him, "When will I get some relief from this pain?" His answer, "Well, I'd rather follow-up on this nerve blocker than just give you something to deal with the pain, as needed." Pain management? No. Research trial? Maybe.

Dr. Kanter and his staff are exceptional. I have never experienced such an amazing group of individuals that clearly understand the patients they are dealing with..those in pain. Dr. Kanter tried everything to help me deal with and alleviate my pain. This was complicated, since I was trying to avoid much needed surgery. Realizing I would have to be on pain meds my entire life, I have finally decided to have the surgery but if I ever need to go to a pain management doctor again I will definitely call on Dr. Kanter.

This Dr. has a very rough manner IMO. He gave me an epidural and it was extremely painful. I've had them in the past from other doctors and felt nothing at all. When I questioned him at the follow-up appointment he said he put novacaine in the needle and shrugged his shoulders. If he put novacaine in he didn't wait for it to work, if he did it at all. I'm sure my screaming was heard all over the OR suite.
