Dr. Lawrence Elliott Schilder, DO

In 2007, I developed an aggressive form of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), an autoimmune bleeding disorder that can be life-threatening. My primary physician referred me to Dr. Schilder—my primary told me if Dr. Schilder couldn't treat my ITP it would unlikely that anyone else would do better. My first impression of Dr. Schilder was that of a rather cold and brusque person. However, I quickly came to realize he was very focused on the problem and was determined to find a solution. Yes, his bedside manner was weak, but his clinical skills were exceptionally strong. I wasn't looking for a guidance counselor. I was seeking an expert in hematology, and that was what I found. Thanks to Dr. Schilder's doggedness and expertise, I have gone into remission and have been in remission for nearly seven years. Despite my situation being quite bleak when I started seeing Dr. Schilder, things got turned around, quality of life improved and I eventually was able to get off chemo… entirely. If you are looking for someone who is going to hold your hand as you wail "Why me?" you will be disappointed with Dr. Schilder. On the other hand, if your expectation is to receive expert medical care I recommend you give Dr. Schilder a call.

Horrible bed side manner...does not care about you as a person, cares about money and making himself look good. Could care less about how you feel or what your going through. Dismissed many of our questions and made us feel stupid for asking. Would not recommend him to anyone. Please find someone else

best doctor around

When you find out your family member has cancer you want the best doctor, best care, and best facility. We are very impressed and love Dr. Schilder and his staff and feel we have been given the very best care possible. I had apprehensions about the bedside manner described in other patient reviews but have found Dr. Schilder to be extremely caring, thorough, and informative.

Dr Schilder, it's true, has a lack of tact, but if you understand what drives him, you will have a better relationship with him. He is a doctor who demands perfection from himself. That is his main goal. Because of this, he is more interested in your medical issues and how to beat it than he is concerned about your feelings. I can live with that. As a matter of fact, I HAVE lived with that after I was given an expiration date by another oncologist I did my research. Dr. Schilder had the credentials I and my entire researching family was looking for. I am now 2 years, 4 months past my given expiration date. (7+years survivor). So he's not going to be your BFF? Likely not. But he aggressively, actively, designed a personalized treatment and worked to save my life. Dr Schilder-1, Cancer-0

All he wants is your money. He DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HIS PATIENTS. BED SIDE MANNER IS NO EXISTANT!!!!!!!!

I would NEVER recommend this doctor to anyone even enemies! Could care less about you as a person. Takes days and many phones calls to get an answer to a problem you may be having . I wish we had more time to research but unfortunately we didn't - maybe that's why we got the bottom of the barrel. Look elsewhere you will be much happier that you did.

Rushes to the worst possible prognosis without properly reviewing paperwork, cat scan info, etc. , extremely dishonest, I could go on... Run for your life!!

Stay away! Jacked me around for months, insurance related I'm sure! But sometimes the ignorant one's are the Smartest? Till I received my medical records and the wrong diagnosis!

Nearly six years ago, I was referred by my primary to Dr. Lawrence Schilder following a diagnosis of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), which was determined to be chronic and refractory. Although stating at one point that my case was unusually difficult to treat, Dr. Schilder stayed the course, explored different treatments in an effort to contain the problem, and eventually was able to gain and maintain control (there is no known cure for ITP).At all times, I was completely kept in the decision-making loop. Dr. Schilder did a thorough job of explaining what was going on and why, the benefits and risks of different treatment courses, and listen to my concerns. As a result, I developed a high degree of confidence in him and felt I was in good hands.At all times he was 100 percent professional, yet compassionate, as well as relentless in seeking some measure of relief for me. I am currently in remission and credit Dr. Schilder's highly detailed knowledge of hematology, top-notch clinical… skills and doggedness as the primary reasons for achieving remission (also a shout-out to Amgen, developer of Nplate, the availability of which was a major turning point in the battle with ITP).Dr. Schilder is currently associated with the University of Chicago and is medical director of UC's cancer treatment center at Silver Cross Hospital, located in New Lenox, IL.
