Dr. Leo L Kron, MD

I saw Dr. Kron between ages 15 and 50, off and on. When I saw him at 15 it was because of difficulties with my early attempts at relationships. Over the years, pondering his therapy, I have come to see those sessions as a major damaging part of my life and a large part of why relationships did not work out for me. I would say in some ways he's psychopathic. I mean by this for example, that he "gaslights", seeks out and rewards inaccurate imaginings that fit his pre-conditioned ideas. He has a way of twisting around what you say to mean its opposite or to fit his pet preconceptions. In relationships, he'd always imagine me as scared and naive but had no conception that in the modern world one has to navigate power imbalances. He seems a baby boomer who grew up too early for feminism. When it comes to work as well, he has a very cramped moral view that all that matters is fitting in. I chose a career that I sacrificed a lot for, requiring I move every year or two, yet he twisted my… concerns that these sacrifices pay off into: well, I guess everything's fine... AVOID...

I've seen Dr. Kron on and off between ages 15 and 50. On the plus side I will say that in a crisis he presents a stable presence. But looking back at my life and his role in it I think there was something very off about his treatment. He's a baby boomer, and very successful in his profession, which might lead some to conclude in a way he's a psychopath.(See recent pop books on those topics.) And looking back, from the start he'd not only treat me as "unreliable narrator", he'd be absolutely sure he could spin the "true" story to replace the "fabrication", my honestly communicated experience. (It is this which is "psychopathic".) With a hammer everything looks like a nail and he must see his work as getting kids to behave, to help the parents, and so is on the lookout for defiance and rebellion. He tries to get on the kid's side and sound reasonable, painting self-assertion as being in thrall to the parent defied. But in context of later life I realize how askew this focus is.… Society has a major problem now of authoritarian followers (and in recent years I've blindly followed my parents' advice, leading to disaster, when I should have insisted more on my concerns.) My initial problem at age 15 was nothing about being defiant, but about starting romantic relationships. Now in my early 50s, I never experienced much success in that area of life and who but this therapist was in a better position to turn that around? Opportunity squandered. He always came back to his pre-determined favorite themes, no matter how many times I'd rejected those as inapplicable. He seemed to think I must have been squeamish, avoidant, afraid. His emphasis is somewhere between Freudian and behaviorist, and in the context of the latter, he often seemed very uninterested in my inner life, my narratives, how I saw things, but instead was confident from knowing the context of my parents' lives, the outline within which nothing needed to be filled in. As for my career, he probably has had even more deleterious effects in that area of life. He's one of those who has great admiration for lives of modest self-restraint that don't aspire to self-expression, that fit in with convention. In the world at large a romanticization of this has led to horrors like economic austerity, which turned out to have no economic justification. In my alternate view, we owe it to ourselves eventually to contribute to the world that which only we can. So when I complain about my recent jobs (yes, steady work, and I'm far from the only one in this boat) wear me out and leave my dreams for expressing my originality unfilled, he won't accept it as an issue of overwhelming importance, but instead "acts dumb" as if he's unable to perceive that there could be a problem, declares success and demands we move on. He may be one of those personalities who needs to keep themselves under control, and who don't have such original inspirations, making him fine with this... I've sacrificed much in life in the hopes of a career where I could make a personal contribution: moving jobs to different parts of the country every year for a decade plus, which also didn't help the progress of my relationships. In summary: short-term may help defuse a crisis, does his thing of trying to get kids to behave. Long-term: beware ruinous romantic life and career, as he'll supplant your own vision for your life with his constricted worldview.

Didn't seem interested in what I was saying & couldn't remember what I'd just told him. Maybe he was good earlier in his career but I think it's time for retirement.

Able to connect with my teenager who was very fearful and angry. Has worked with him for 2 years and who is now off to college. Largely thanks to Dr. Kron.

I was in psychoanalytic treatment with this physician for several years. If you're looking for an intelligent,empathic, reliable psychiatrist with high professional standards, I recommend Dr. Kron.

Wow - I am very surprised to read how disappointed these few responders were with Dr. Kron's care. I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Kron in the late 90s, when I was in my late 20s and dealing with a chronic illness and the anxiety/depression resulting from it. Although some might find Dr. Kron's therapy style to be "cold," it was more of a reflection of his Freudian-based approach. Not only was he extremely insightful and knowledgeable in the field of psychiatry, but if you hung around long enough, you'd find a very compassionate and caring doctor.
