Dr. Leonard J Gitter, MD

Dr. Gitter, like any oncologist, should know that chemotherapy and other cancer treatments suppress the immune system and leave patients vulnerable to infections. However, Dr. Gitter ignored a visible rash on my family member’s leg and proceeded with a 5th of 6 chemotherapies. Soon afterwards the rash expanded to both sides of my family member’s body. A few days later, an urgent care doctor diagnosed disseminated shingles and prescribed an essential antiviral med. Since more than 3 days passed since onset of shingles, the antiviral could not prevent post-herpetic neuralgia, a condition with no effective treatment resulting in chronic pain. Dr. Gitter had seen the onset of the rash and should have put the chemo on hold until a proper diagnosis was made! I sent a portal message to Dr. Gitter to inform him about the diagnosis and to terminate any future treatments with him. He never acknowledged my message or apologized. I later discovered a clinical note in my family member’s record… in which Dr. Gitter added the antiviral that he had never prescribed to my family member’s med list! This is only negative review I’ve ever made of a physician, but I feel other potential patients should be cautious if considering being under Dr. Gitter’s care.

Dr Gitter was patient, kind and answered my questions and put my mind at ease. I immediately felt at ease with him and his staff. Highly recommend him.

Clear explanations of my test results and likely cause of a few out of bounds results and some suggestions. Very reassuring. Nice person, great bedside manner.

Find someone else

Dr Gitter was my sons doctor. He left Geisinger without saying anything. We thought we had a good relationship with him but obviously his patients aren’t a priority. I understand career opertunities but it was very unprofessional how he handled his situation. We found out from another patient. Cancer is back and we need a new oncologist. Best wishes Gitter.

Dr. Gitter was compassionate and professional. He called me even on the weekend to get back to me about my side effects. My stage 4 lung cancer is in remission for the last 6 months. He's the best doctor I've ever had.

I would never recommend Dr. Gitter to anyone. He was so arrogant and rude to our family. He talked down to us and would not let us get in a word. He told us we were not able to make any decisions on our family members chemo that he made all decisions. He would not tell us a plan just said be here on a date. He never would call us back. His bed side manner was terrible.

Truly treated me like family. Very busy office. But Dr. Gitter went out of his way to take care of me.
