Dr. Leonard H. Wexler, MD

I never met a more compassionate human being, never mind Doctor, in my life.Dr. Wexler was with my son and my family throughout our 7 year ordeal with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. Dr. Wexler was able to find treatments for this hopeless disease, that kept up the quality of my sons life to the point where my son said that the last 7 years of his life,when he was battling cancer, were the best years of his life. When chemo was no longer effective Dr. Wexler found an experimental drug (irenotecan) that kept my son going a few more years. When that ceased to work, Dr. Wexler got him into a trial at the NIH. He was the first patient at the NIH to have a stem cell transplant for his particular disease and it bought him another 2 years of QUALITY life. At the end, Dr. Wexler would drive from the city to our house in NJ to sit and comfort all of us. He even spoke at the funeral. There is no one like this man

The care and compassion that Dr. Wexler showed for our son and our family during a terrible diagnosis was simply amazing. Excellent medical care is available in many places around the world. Compassionate medical care is truly special and Dr. Wexler and MSKCC absolutely changed our lives.

It has been 13 yrs and not a day goes by that I don’t think of how grateful I was to have Dr. Wexler as my daughters oncologist. My 19yr Old Ashley did not make it but Dr. Wexler is who got us through the unthinkable and parents worst nightmare. I would refer him and have to anyone. His knowledge & Help is priceless and Forever I thank him and his staff for all they did for Ashley and our family even when the outcome isn’t what anyone could ever imagine happening. Thank you from our hearts. I remember people saying he didn’t have a good bedside manner. That isn’t the case . It I believe is that he has a job of telling parents the worst and treating our babies. Once you understand him you will know he is everything and more a Pediatric Oncologist could be and more.

He is cold hearted. Treated my daughter, was nice to her until her cancer came back then dismissed her. Never let us know it was coming back until it was to late.

An amazing human being and doctor.

We called his office late in the afternoon after finding out that our son had cancer. His receptionist could not have been nicer or more friendly. He agreed to see us the following morning, but had his receptionist tell us that he was already over-booked (it's incredible how busy the practice is) and to be prepared that we might have to wait. When we arrived, we were greated courteusly and found a beautiful waiting room and play room, with a separate area for new families, away from the grim reality we were about to enter. We registered and then waited about a half-hour to be seen. Dr. Wexler spent nearly 2 hours with us that first morning (he spent easily 5 times that with us over the next week or two as we struggled to get our bearings and process huge amounts of information). He was amazing with our son - in fact, before he spoke to US, he turned to our son to speak with him. Our son's treatment has by no means been easy or without complications. Dr. Wexler has been there on… every single occasion to explain what was happening, review treatment options and alternatives, and actively solicit our input on our son's care. He has dropped medications off at our home for our son. He has e-mailed and called late at night just to see how he (and we) were doing. He regularly calls to leave birthday greetings for our son on our answering machine. We could not imagine a more caring, compassionate, or brilliant physician to walk at the side of a family dealing with a child with cancer than Dr. Wexler.

Dr. Wexler is one of the most caring people I have ever met, and by far the most incredible doctor i have ever encountered during my four years of treatment. He is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of diagnosis and treatment. One of the most important things i have found is that when you are in the office talking to him he takes as much time as you need answering all questions as detailed as he can. You never feel like he has to see other patients as he will sit with you until you cannot think of any more questions to ask. When i was diagnosed at 19 my family and I were in the office for close to 2 hours with him. His bedside manner and his knowledge of all sarcoma's is what he is known for. He even attends a camp for children with cancer for two weeks every summer as the attending doctor, and is known for his sense of humor. I have never met a family who didn't give him glowing reviews and they are much deserved. If you have cancer or your child does, this is truly the best… doctor to be treated by.
