Dr. Lisa Ann Caramico, MD

She was the anesthesiologist assigned to the team to treat my grandson who has profound autism. I politely explained to her that due to years of self-injurious behavior (he hits himself in the nose) a nasal cannula (tube down the nose) cannot be used once he is put under as his passages have scar tissue and the cannula causes bleeding and horrible discomfort for him afterward. Her response: "once he goes under a tube WILL be placed in his nose and there WILL be some bleeding from it." Fortunately the treating doctor spoke up and said he could do the work with the tube in his mouth. On the way into the operating room his mom explained that the quickest way to get him under was to hold him still and put the mask on his face and he would quickly go under (this was our 4th time in for this procedure in 3 years). Dr. Caramico refused to do this and insisted that she give him an injection to make him drowsy. He became combative, bit himself severely several times and dislocated his thumbs… (another self-injurious behavior). Dr. Caramico SCREAMED at my daughter in the OR and told her that it was HER decision on how to put him under. This woman should not be taking care of human beings.
