Dr. Loren Scott Michel, MD

Very rude and no bedside manners to begin with. He does not have the ability to understand where the patient is coming from or their perspective. Personally I was offended the way he spoke to my dad regarding his health condition not professional at all

We consulted with Dr Michel at WashU when my husband was diagnosed with tonsil cancer. We were trying to decide whether to have surgery before chemo/radiation or just chemo/radiation. He called our home one morning to get our decision. My husband had already left for work, so I told him our decision to have surgery first. He proceeded to chew me out and asked why my husband would choose to mutilate his body when chemo/radiation would be sufficient. I'd never had a physician speak to me that way and requested he call my husband to discuss it. He ended up speaking to my husband as rudely as he did to me. We contacted our surgeon that same day and requested a new oncologist be put on our team. My husband's surgery lasted 17 hours, during which the surgeon chased the tumor all the way to the base of the skull. We followed with 6 weeks of radiation and two rounds of chemo. Because the surgeon knew where the problem areas were, he worked closely with the radiation oncologist to direct… treatment. If we had not chosen surgery there would have been no way to know the tumor was so much more involved than first thought. During an already scary and stressful time, being spoken to and treated the way we were by Dr Michel was a horrible experience that no one should have had to endure. If we had chosen to go the way he wanted to force us to do, I fully believe my husband would not be here five years later and cancer-free.

An obnoxious twit without compassion and simply painting by the numbers

Working in conjunction with Dr. Nancy Lee, proton radiation expert at MSK, Dr. Michel seriously weighed the pros and cons about whether to use cisplatin for a second time in 17 years to treat my husband's neck cancer. While cisplatin is the "gold standard," it is extremely potent chemotherapy. His decision to move forward with it most likely saved my husband's life. Dr. Michel is not an alarmist--he has a very calming bedside manner and effect on his patients who are dealing with cancer. It is obvious that he cares very much about curing cancer while balancing it with concern about his patient's quality of life. We cannot say enough about him--wonderful physician!
