Summary
About Luke Edwards
At age 11, after going on a summer mission trip with his family to Papua New Guinea, Luke Edwards, NP, decided he wanted a medical career. His mother, a Registered Nurse, worked with a missionary couple who ran the clinic there. “I saw what an impact medicine can have on the lives of people, and I believe that God has put within me a heart to serve people. I love it!” he says.
He chose the specialty of surgery and trauma because of a fascination with both areas. When Luke decided to get his master’s degree, he knew he wanted to continue working in emergency and trauma in some capacity. In his role, he describes himself as a kind of middleman. “Ideally, my role helps streamline the overall patient experience by keeping everyone on the same page,” he says.
Luke is a graduate of Indiana University South Bend, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing and his Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner. In addition to experience in hospital and …clinical settings, Luke has been a travel nurse in locations around the country. He also has volunteer experience with medical mission outreach teams in Honduras and Zambia.
For his patients, Luke wants them to know his goal is to get to the root of the problem. “We’re not taking any shortcuts. We’re doing things the right way,” he says.
In his own words…
Who is or was the most influential people/role models in your life? My parents. My mom because of health challenges over the years - including several brain surgeries - and her continued trust in the goodness of God. She’s resilient. My dad because of his consistency. He’s a blue-collar guy that’s a craftsman in all things wood. Growing up, he used to say, “Perfect is good enough,” and that is definitely a mentality that I try to embody in everything I do.
What was your first job growing up? What do you remember about it? I used to clean carpets in the evenings for Heaven’s Best Carpet Cleaning. There’s nothing like looking back over your work and seeing those carpets shine!
What is your favorite food? Movie? Favorite foods: Italian Favorite movie: Right now, Top Gun: Maverick
What was your best/worst subjects in school growing up? Best: the sciences. Worst: English.
If you could sit down to dinner with anyone (alive or deceased) who would it be and why? Lewis, Clark, and Sacagawea. I think hearing stories of what it was like to explore America from both European and Native American perspectives would be fascinating!
In addition to medicine, what are you passionate about? I love spending time with my family, my church and learning to cook good food.
What are your hobbies, interests? Traveling, Notre Dame football, jogging, and all things at the beach
What is something most people don’t know about you? I’m a huge believer in the benefits of a daily cold shower!
