Dr. Madge Lou Barnes, MD

I had just moved to the area and was trying to find a doctor that would be attentive and compassionate to my needs without feeling rushed to get to the next patient. She took her time to ask questions and to get my response. When my results came back she sat down with me and explained each test to me to and the importance of each of them. I'm so glad that I found her to be my primary care physician.

It has been some four years since I first saw Dr. Barnes. I asked to see her due to a recurring stomach/bowel issue. As I received 99.9% of my care from a long-standing relationship at the Ft. Worth Veterans Administration Clinic, about all Dr. Barnes could do was review my history, medications and the upper and lower GI results. Dr. Barnes asked for me to return IF my problem was not corrected, which it has been. I returned to see Dr. Barnes at the request of AARP who wanted me to have a back-up PCP which is why I rescheduled an appointment. As I was the last appointment for the day Dr. Barnes spent quite a bit of time getting to know me. From the first visit I was impressed with how critically she was in listening to me and from reading her nonverbal communication I felt she was genuinely interested in me and what I had to tell her. She has asked for a follow-up just to check on my status. I like this and do not feel I would accomplish anything by sharing my meeting with Dr.… Barnes with my long-standing PCP with the VA.

Very rude and unprofesional. I was extremely shocked and disappointed by her abruptness. I had a same day appointment sheduled for 5:30 pm. I left my job which is about 45 minutes away. I rushed through 5 pm traffic. There was delay because of a wreck. I was about 5 minutes away from the doctors office. I called the office to advise that I was about three exits away from the office . I advised the receptionist that I would possibly be arriving a bit late because of traffic. She said not to worry because there was a 15 minute grace period. My appointment was at 5:20 pm. I arrived at the office at 5:26. I waited 40 minutes to see Dr. Barnes. I did not mind waiting as it had been a long day for me too. i had been trying to get an appointment for several weeks. Dr. Barnes walked into the office and before she even said hello or introduced herself, snapped, "You are late!" I attempted to explain about the traffic but she interrupted and said "that's late." She then went on to… say that she was on her way home and everyone else had left and someone reminded her that I was here. To add insult to injury she said that she did not have time to examine me but would just renew my medications. Even though she was rude that was really okay as i had been out of my blood pressure and diabetes meds for a while because my previous doctor would not renew them because I had not been able to get off work andmissed some appointments. She looked at the goiter on my neck and asked me if I had a Dr . to care for that. I advised that my Dr. left recently and I did not know that he was no longer at the clinic until yesterday. I hurriedly asked her if I could just get another appointment for a flu shot. On her way out the door, she frowned and said, "oh now you need a flu shot" and stomped away. I did not see her again and did not even know if the visit was over or not. I sat there for about 10 minutes before the CNA came in and gave me flu shot. I appreciate the flu shot. I appreciate the same day appointment, I appreciate the kindness of the CNA , but Dr. Barnes was a sad example of a professional. I understand having a stressful day, I understand that we are all humans and have lives outside of work and we all do get tired . I do not understand or believe that there is ever a reason for a patient to be treated in such a rude, condescening manner. i am so sorry that I interrupted her busy schedule. I have never seen her before and do not want to ever be cared by her again. I would have respected her and the clinic if they had even rescheduled me rather than to be treated in such horrid way.
