Four months ago, my doctor discovered a rare paraganglioma tumor on my carotid neck artery. Only two persons per million get this type tumor with only 20% in the head and/or neck. That increased my odds to greater than one in 3 million. This was very frightening. I also learned that there are very strong probabilities of it becoming malignant and extremely life threatening. A biopsy could not even be taken without risk of death. Upon searching physicians nationwide, the results were very somber. I found no one showing reasonable confidence in performing the surgery. An appointment was made at one of the most widely known cancer centers in the U.S. They began lining up many specialists to check me out. After learning that very few paragangliomas have been treated there over the last thirty years, the appointment was canceled. By the grace of God, I accidentally came into contact with another paraganglioma patient. She received surgery by Dr Sheahan for the same type tumor… after researching surgeons for five years. She recommended him to me. I was very impressed with his confidence, training and experience. He became my choice. The surgery was performed with zero side effects. Praise God, it was also benign.
