Mallory Poynter, PA-C

Poynter, a certified physician assistant, has practiced medicine since 2013, currently serving patients ages 18 and older.. Her areas of interest include gallbladder disease, abdominal wall hernias, wound care, and evaluations of lumps and bumps (lipomas, sebaceous cysts, soft tissue masses). She also works at Saint Joseph East as an inpatient Advanced Practice Provider for the general, bariatric and breast surgery teams, working in both the operating room and on the hospital floors.Poynter has worked in several surgical specialties, and understands how patients feel-usually in pain and worried-when they come to the surgery office. "I show humankindness by always greeting my patients with a smile and providing assurance that I will help them today," she said. In her approach to care, Poynter works with patients "to get the full story to their issue," to properly address their needs. "When working in a specialty, it can be easy to fall into the trap of tunnel vision of your own …specialty and I make an effort to not do that," she said. She decided on her specialty during her rotation in general surgery, realizing she wanted to be able to follow patients through their entire health care journey. Her favorite part of her job is assisting in surgery and caring for her patients afterward while they recover and prepare for discharge.She received her undergraduate degree and her master's degree in physician assistant studies from University of Kentucky. She did a post-graduate surgical residency at Norwalk Hospital/Yale College of Medicine, where she served as surgical house staff and gained experience across multiple surgical specialties. Poynter is also a member of our hospital-based APP council and has a special interest in precepting physician assistant students.In her off hours, Poynter spends time with her husband and three children, staying busy attending their many sporting events.
