Dr. Margaret Ann Kaiser, MD

A few months ago I had to take a trip to the Garrett County ER for a heart related issue. This was my first encounter with Dr. Kaiser. She serves as the Sleep Specialist in Oakland, MD and I believe it was her turn to administer to any patients that needed her help in the ER. I must say I was totally blessed to have this woman deal with my issues. I cannot put my finger on it but, Dr. Kaiser has a way to make her patients feel loved and cared for. Since I use a cpap at home I made an appointment to see her at a later date and This is the Doctor of my choice. FINALLY! I am not an easy patient and she asked all the right questions and got me back on track with this sleep apnea issue. She serves the populous of Garrett County and in my opinion does an outstanding job of it.

I have been a patient of Dr. Kaiser's for over five years. In that time I have not had any severe health problems, so this review is about dealing with her regarding my general health and my perceptions of her expertise. We live in a very small town where the medical care can often be borderline at best. In this way, Dr. Kaiser is a shining light as she (and another physician who has since retired) are/were really quite good caregivers. She is well educated, board certified and seems to care about her patients... but. She also seems to lack empathy and is quite pedantic in her minuscule explications of simple medical issues accompanied by childish pictures and pop-up anatomy books. This may work well for her Amish patients, many of whom have not seen themselves naked... we'll... ever, but it comes across as condescending and insulting to anyone who has completed high-school biology. Her office staff are quite friendly and helpful, but the office itself is only open 2 1/2 days a week… as I understand Dr. Kaiser does extensive rounds at nursing homes across our very large and rural county here in MD. Nevertheless, she seems to have made no provision for her office to be manned on even a part-time basis to return calls, nor to have a nurse or PA in the office when she is not there to help those with minor complaints or illnesses. The office itself is well located across from the driveway to the local Wal-Mart and is easy to find. When you arrive for your appointment, the wait can sometimes be quite long, both in the waiting room and in the exam room. During the visit, Dr. Kaiser is quite affable, but distant and often does not seem to listen to your issues or experiences. It's almost as though she has a diagnosis in mind regardless of what you are saying. She does spend quite a bit of time with you during general exams and is quite thorough. Being in her early 60s, she may be coming up on retirement soon, though there's no way to know. Our area will loses a very capable physician if/when that happens, despite her interpersonal issues.
