Dr. Maria De La Pena, MD

After 5 months, the MILD procedure for this stenosis afflicted patient resulted in NO improvement in a diagnosed severe bi-lateral leg weakness mostly emanating from L3/L4. Indeed, the condition is worsening. Dr. De La Pena was professional in conduct and properly performed the procedure but showed little patient concern. Her answers were perfunctory, almost reluctant, and time seemed to be limited for the patient consult. A 10-minute at most follow-up visit produced little additional detail about recovery except that it would take time. How much was not said. Later attempts with messages left for her assistant, (Edi or Amy?) to schedule a telephone consult with Dr. De La Pena, were unsuccessful. Five months later, two calls have yet to be returned. It should be noted that MILD is not necessarily a cure, and is intended only to straighten the bulging or out of alignment ligament alongside the spinal cord. A neuro-surgeon may be better trained and equipped to perform what may… be a full laminectomy for some.

Considering that the MILD lower back surgery is not in widespread use and is even controversial, a patient follow-up would be expected following a reasonable time for recuperation, such as over 3 months. In repeated attempts to contact Dr. de la Pena's assistant to furnish details on the recovery, no return calls were made after two attempts in over 2 weeks. Considering the extraordinary cost of the procedure, the bare minimum expectation is that either the doctor or the assistant should follow-up with patients.

Excellent bedside manner. Felt very comfortable.

I could ask for a better Dr, she treated mi like family, the staff is great, knowledgeable and ready to serve you.She is available when you need her and answer your calls ASAP I highly recommend her
