Dr. Maria Alejandra Plata, MD

I am writing this review to share my deeply disappointing experience with Dr. Maria Plata, MD, in the hope of helping others avoid the same situation. While I usually refrain from leaving negative reviews, the level of care — or rather, lack thereof — that I received from Dr. Plata was concerning enough to warrant speaking out. I sought psychiatric treatment for ADHD, Binge Eating Disorder, Major Depression, and Anxiety with panic attacks. I came into treatment with a clear history of success in managing these conditions under a previous provider who approached my care with empathy, skill, and a comprehensive understanding of how these conditions interact. Unfortunately, Dr. Plata demonstrated none of those qualities. What stood out immediately — and consistently — was her cold, emotionally distant demeanor. She lacks the warmth, compassion, and basic human empathy that should be a cornerstone of any therapeutic relationship, especially in psychiatry. The nature of psychiatric care… demands connection, validation, and a genuine interest in a patient’s well-being. Dr. Plata’s detached, dismissive, and at times condescending approach felt not only inappropriate, but actively harmful for someone in her position. She also appeared inflexible and unable to manage multiple coexisting conditions, particularly ADHD and anxiety, despite clear documentation and previous treatment success with evidence-based interventions. Rather than working collaboratively to understand what had helped me in the past, she ignored or minimized that history. Her treatment approach felt rigid and impersonal, and she seemed more focused on control than care. What concerned me most was her manipulative behavior and clear personal bias, which manifested in how she framed our conversations and shifted blame onto me when her approach was questioned. Instead of working with me to refine my care plan, she made me feel as though my needs were unreasonable or invalid — a tactic that is completely unacceptable in any medical field, let alone mental health. Ultimately, it became clear that Dr. Plata does not prioritize her patients’ well-being. If you are looking for compassionate, individualized, and effective psychiatric care, I strongly urge you to avoid Dr. Maria Plata. Her demeanor and approach are not only incompatible with the expectations of a psychiatrist, but they also risk worsening the very symptoms patients come to have treated.
