Dr. Marie Bui, MD

I went to an optometrist and was told that I might need to have cataract surgery on my right eye and he recommended that I see Dr. Maria Bui. I scheduled my appointment with Dr. Bui and found her and TruVision staff to be professional, courteous, and respectful. During my consultation, they found that I also have cataract in my left eye. Realizing how quickly my vision was degrading, I was thinking to have cataract surgery performed on both eyes. After discussing my expectation, Dr Bui recommended that the multifocal lens (PanOptix) would be my best choices. We schedule surgery for both eyes several weeks out. I learned that my medical insurance would not cover the surgeries because of my high deductible. I was unhappy to hear this news and considered going with monofocal lens or deciding if I should do surgery on one eye only. I spoke to many friends and people that had cataract surgery to help make my decision. I was surprise that it was a split and didn't help in my… decision. I called Dr. Bui with my concerns and her calmness and confidence reassured me that my decision with the multifocal lens were right for me and I would be happy with it. I knows this sound cliché, but I genuinely felt a sincereness that she wanted me to have the best vision I could get. She laid it out for me that given my health, condition, and past history of my eyes, the multifocal will meet my expectation. Lens replacement is expensive, but what price do you place for having quality vision? For me, I already felt how cataract was affecting my quality of life. My surgery on my right eye went smoothly and painless; within 48 hours I was able to see clearly at all distances. My second surgery on my left eye didn’t go as smoothly. I felt some scratchiness when I blink my eyes but that went away after several hours. I also felt a lot of pressure that was very painful and didn’t appear to go away. It got worse as each hour pass, so I called Dr Bui and she asked me to meet her at the office. I had my son drive me to her office. When I got there, she releases the pressure with a tool and apply eye drops to my left eye. I thought I would have to endure the pain all night, but I am so thankful that Dr. Bui was able to treat me that evening. The next day after surgery, I can almost see as clearly as my right eye. What I want to say about lens replacement is that I am ecstatic and I should of done it early when I first detected cataract. My vision is the best that it has ever been. I am able to read fine print as close as 6” from my face (seriously). At nights, I do see starbursts and sometime halos around lights but they are no worse than my glasses. This is my opinion and take it with a grain of salt, but my research on why some people have good result or bad result is directly related on the doctor you choose. I very grateful to Dr. Bui for her consultation, calmness, and confidence in my quest for the perfect vision. I give Dr. Bui all the credit for my decision to have surgery on both eyes and lens choice by consulting and reassuring me that I will be happy and I will not regret the choice. Her sincerity and care for her patient is amazing. Thank you very much Dr. Bui from the bottom of my heart.

Recently, I had my cataracts removed from my right eye and a lens inserted at the AustinEye facility. It was quite an experience. The entire procedure was not what I expected. It was a very pleasant event. The nurses and attendants were fantastic and very concerned about my well-being. They treated me better than any clinic or hospital that I have attended. While I was in Room One, a nurse, I believe named Dawn, spoke in a soft warm voice saying ”you have only 1 minute and the pressure will be relieved, you have 50 seconds and are doing great, you have only 30 seconds to go, etc.” Her soft, calm voice made me feel comfortable and very relaxed. The day before my surgery, my wife and I had our toenails trimmed. The pain from clipping my toe nails was much worse than the Cataract laser procedure. I felt no pain during the surgery. The following day I had to drive to the clinic for a Post-operative examination. While driving to the AustinEye clinic, I did not wear my glasses. I… couldn’t believe how much my eye sight improved. I could read distant signs and still view the readings on my van’s dashboard. I was informed my vision for my right eye was 20–25. Both Dr. Bui and I were extremely pleased on how while the surgery went and my existing condition. My appointment at the Clinic was 5 pm. I left about 6:15 pm and went to Catfish Parlor to pick up some grilled catfish for my wife. It started to get dark on my way home and my left eye was creating a problem because of the night glare and halos from other vehicles. I had to shut my left eye and view only through my right eye. What a difference it made. With only my right eye, everything looked natural and clear. I am 87 and the joy of my new vision makes me feel like I am only 65. I am looking forward to removal of the cataracts in my other eye. Overall, I am extremely pleased with Dr. Bui and especially with the wonderful staff of AustinEye.
