Dr. Mariette Murphy, MD

Dr. Murphy has great credentials but her bedside manner and arrogance were too much for us to place any amount of trust in her or her recommendations . She saw our newborn in the hospital three times postpartum, which was very nice of her to visit us over the weekend. However, each time she visited, she was unpleasant and her instructions were delivered in a way that were not meant to be challenged. We feel as parents the right to ask questions and challenge is a healthy part of the doctor + patient experience. This enables a level of trust with the doctor that would allow us to take her care instructions at the highest level of care and adhere to them verbatim. Most of the things she said to us about our newborn and mother (mother's nutrition, feeding schedule, baby BM) felt off to us, so we questioned her and received short answers intended to stop the line of questioning. So, we bounced each of these recommendations off of the fantastic hospital staff at MGH (nurses, residents… and attendings) and NOT ONE person agreed with her. We did this individually and with about 8 different people - there was no group think. This was alarming and the last red flag for us. In medicine, there is room for dissent and for doctors to make care recommendations that others do not agree with. We would be happy to follow her instructions if we had the opportunity to challenge them in a mutually constructive manner. We promptly changed pediatricians upon hospital discharge and I would tell all of my friends and colleagues to find a different doctor than Dr. Murphy.
