Dr. Mark Christopher Chames, MD

If I could give zero stars, I would. This man was dismissive, had zero empathy or bedside manner, and rather than saying something should be looked into further, stated an extremely rare aorta defect was present in a 20 week fetus and another ultrasound had to be scheduled for a MONTH later. At the second ultrasound, it was found that the baby’s heart is COMPLETELY NORMAL AND HEALTHY. This is absolutely unacceptable for a U of M physician and based on reviews I’ve seen elsewhere, striking unnecessary fear into pregnant women is kind of his thing.

I have two healthy 14 year old sons because of the caring heart and expertise of this doctor. I came in at 20 weeks simply because I had a feeling that something was wrong. No evidence, just a feeling. I was young and felt silly even saying this, but Dr. Chames told me, "Well, often mom's know best. Let's trust your feeling and check it out." Indeed something was wrong. At 31 weeks when my boys were delivered the attending doctor told his medical students, "Do you see this? This is nothing short of a miracle." But it wasn't a miracle, it was Dr. Chames. In a world where the voices of women are often ignored, Dr. Chames listens. He is a man of heart, expertise and action.

No empathy, rude, dismissive and level of care provided was sub-standard

Dr. Chames saw me through two high-risk pregnancies that resulted in healthy babies. I see that other reviewers thought he was alarmist. In my case, it would be more accurate to say he was cautious and very focused on the goal of keeping me and the baby safe. I appreciated that! It's true that there was not a lot of "you go girl, you got this!" during my appointments; that's not his style. But I was OK with that - more than OK, since I felt like I was in expert hands and he was doing the worrying for me. So it depends what you are looking for. But I thought he was a terrific doctor and would recommend him highly.

Be careful with this doc he is an alarmist...he pulled the dead baby card.

Dr. Chames is easy to speak with, listens well and answered all my questions thoroughly. I have a medical background so I tend to quiz my doctors and he really impressed me.

I personally did not care for this doctor's beside manner or explanation to why certain procedures are necessary. I make sure to do extra homework after meeting with him because most of my questions were met with non-answers and sometimes scare tactics.
