Dr. Cummins was raised in Lexington, Kentucky, where he attended the University of Kentucky, receiving both his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees. Â He then advanced his education by completing a two-year, post-doctoral residency in general and hospital dentistry at Wake Forest University School of Medicine/North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
After residency he practiced in Newport News, Virginia, while teaching part-time at the Medical College of Virginia/School of Dentistry. Immediately prior to returning to his home state of Kentucky, he served on the clinical and teaching dental faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
