Summary
My interest in medicine has truly been lifelong, beginning with my work in community clinics when I was in high school. While I was in college, I volunteered in hospital emergency departments and worked as a burn technician caring for severely burned patients. Some of my most wonderful and challenging years were spent studying and training for my medical degree. Although many medical specialties interested me, my true passion was surgery. I trained as a general surgeon at the Navy hospital in Oakland. After that training, I spent three years with my family in Okinawa, Japan, practicing surgery at the Naval hospital. I left the Navy and joined Kaiser Permanente in 1990.
