Dr. Mark Gurtovy, MD

The most openly greedy doctor I have ever seen. Keeps you waiting 30 - 45 minutes most of the time. He is, in many respects typical of the psychiatric profession -- practicing only "medication management". In other words he does not really talk you, just randomly picks medications, whatever is new or interests him. Like other psychiatrists he just wants to show that he is better than you and punish you by withholding medications that you need. He will sit there and fill out a form while he is supposed to be talking to you and then bill you twice -- once for the office visit and once for the form. He just prescribed me a medication that can harm people who have diabetes, high blood pressure, tremors, high cholesterol and obese and may have many more side effects. It is clearly not a good choice for a person who suffers from all of those conditions. It is also a medication which has not been tested on pregnant women. I would advise anyone to avoid that type of medicine at all… costs. But I digress. This man has lied to me about things that he should know that I know. He has contradicted himself, especially now that he is getting older. I have no faith in him or his choice of medications or other advice. He has reprimanded me for having one drink every three months. He is a total creep. Most psychiatrists are but here you are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Avoid.

He spends time asking the same questions visit after visit, never remembers his patient’s responses, and this causes extraordinary wait times (expect at least an hour or two at every visit). He will tell you said wait times are due to taking time with patients, but that time is needed because he will not remember a thing you tell him. He is heavy handed with meds and makes no effort to support patients to engage in other care that would improve their symptoms (i.e. therapy). More frustrating, they will make no effort to bill you for money owed, make no attempt to contact you, and report you directly to a collection agency. As someone who works in healthcare I would NEVER recommend him.

Extremely poor time management, don't go if you are not ready to spend one to two hours in the waiting room. Poor communication, unreturned messages. The Doctor will probably spend some time with you, if you make it past the waiting room and do not get too frustrated to absorb information.

Dr. Gurtovy has a habitual practice of grossly overbooking and making patients wait a minimum of 1 - 3 (yes, I said 3!) hours. Even when you call him on this and ask for the first or last appointment so you don't have to wait, he still makes you wait. When you see him he gives you a few minutes while talking to him he is on his computer not paying attention. Then he rushes you and says "time is up". He only refills your prescription if you see him regularly. Even if you feel you need to trim down your appointment schedule he insists on seeing you more frequently in order to get the prescription. I asked for a 90 Rx because it is less expensive, he says ok, then when I get to the pharmacy they say he only prescribed for 30 days. See a doctor who a) cares, b) respects your time, and c) is ethical and prescribes using his medical knowledge and not his profit sheet.

I don't know how he has been practicing for so long, and allowed to prescribe medication. Truly saddened real care and concern can't be given to patients with serious mental problems.

A very good doctor, but the waiting time is ridiculous

Dr Gurtovy is very courteous, does not 'over prescribe' like many psychiatrists do. He accepts all insurance, and as a psychiatrist gets all the impatient mentally ill Medicaid types, who will probably bash his time management and skills since they are ill. He is very thorough, great bedside manner, but does overbook-or rather spends too much time with patients for the 50 bucks insurance companies pay him. Those reviews clearly come from the uninformed and not well. Lovely man with a sweet sense of humor.

I went to Dr. Gurtovy regularly for nearly a year and each time I had to wait at least one hour to be seen. The visits with the doctor were all less than 10 minutes each. There was no attempt by the doctor to discuss my treatment or how things were progressing. I told him the medication that I wanted and he gave me a prescription for it. This is not how a psychiatrist should work. There was a complete disrespect of my time in this office. I complained to the receptionist who said that there was nothing that she can do to keep the appointments on schedule. Only go here if you have a LOT of time to waste and don't mind seeing a doctor who won't take the time to give you a full visit.

A very nasty man and as far as physicians go, definitely not the smartest. Clueless on drug interaction. Highly afraid of being sued. Tries to give everyone the same medication, wonder how much the drug company is paying him? It would be unbearable going there if it wasn't for his lovely staff. I curse this guy in Russian every time I leave. He does not like fat people, he is impatient, he bills a lot of money for reports that other doctors do for free. But sometimes there is an advantage to going to an idiot. They're easy to persuade if you need to persuade them of something. Humorless man who keeps you waiting a long time.
