Dr. Mark Gerard Hickey, MD

I hesitated to write this for a long time because it is a pretty serious thing. Dr Hickey himself did not seem to be a bad doctor that I know of. But he had a woman on his staff, a young technician that I filed a complaint against, and nothing was done. As far as I know she is still there and will do, (maybe has done,) the same kind of thing to others, God help them. Her name was Sara Hall, she was younger and had short blond hair. The woman's job was to fit me with a CPAP, and when it turned out I could not physically tolerate a CPAP, she became quietly destructive. And I had no idea what she was doing, never suspected anything at the time. Specifically, she began to make notes in my chart which were entirely untrue, and these were supposedly things I had said, only I never said anything like it. And they were crazy-sounding things. This person was literally making up alarming things and putting them on my medical record. These were things that would change the way someone… would treat me if they read these notes. I don't know what was wrong with this lady to do such a thing. I did not find out at first what she had done, but then I noticed Dr Hickey's office brought up the idea of doing some kind of mental therapy on me, which was not at all what I was there for. I was there for a sleep study to see if I was snoring at night because I was exhausted. This new line of interest they suddenly took up made no sense and I balked. Finally, it began to seem to me like something was wrong. I asked to get a copy of my records, which any patient has a right to do. When I went to pick them up, I was invited by a guy I believe was a manager or consultant, into an office and he wanted to chat with me while my records were being retrieved. It just seemed a little out of place. I was just there to pick up a copy of my records and could have simply waited in the waiting room like anyone else. I was not there for any kind of interview or consultation. So now this really had me wondering. When I finally got the records, took them home and looked at them, I was SHOCKED at what I saw there. This technician (Sara) had made notes in my chart after visits that said I was saying things I never said and NEVER would have said. Some of them about things that were never even discussed. For instance, she wrote down that I said I wished my test results were worse than they were, reportedly to get some particular procedure or treatment. I didn't even know what that treatment was. I certainly never said such a thing or even thought such a thing. In another spot, she had entered notes that said I had described to her some weird practice I was supposedly doing to "make things disappear". This was beyond bizarre! I could hardly believe my eyes when I read these things. It was hard to even fathom that someone at a doctors office would do such a thing. I suppose she was trying to make me look like a prospect for mental treatment. I called Boulder Community, which is the medical network of doctors Hickey's office was in, and filed a complaint with their Patient Advocate. I went through the entire record and marked what was wrong with it and supplied that to her office. At that time I asked to have all those things removed from my chart, but Boulder Community said it was up to Dr Hickey's office and there was nothing they could do. It has been three years now since this happened and I still have a copy of these records. If you want fair treatment by doctors, if your life could someday even come to depend upon correct treatment by doctors, and those doctors share information in a network, things like this should NEVER happen. This activity is not safe for patients. I felt and still feel completely violated. So no, I cannot recommend this doctor's office to anyone.

I saw a wonderful sleep medicine neurologist for many years who tailored a medication regime that worked well for me. Unfortunately, he left the area. Dr Hickey refused to continue those medications and acused me of being an addict and drug seeker. Dude, I'm just trying to sleep. Unprofessional jerk.

Run screaming from REM Sleep Medicine or whatever their new name is. The front desk staff is unprofessional. I have them my insurance details including member ID, and they said I was covered. They wanted to cancel my appt when there was a problem with my insurance. When that was resolved, they called me to solicit an appointment. I had already made an appt with a different practice, but figured it couldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Well, it turns out it could hurt because some time after my appt, I got a bill for the full amount with no insurance discount. I called Tracey the billing manager, and she said that I was on a "narrow network" -- never heard of that and definitely no other provider has ever said that-- and that Evelyn Bolt wasn't in the network. Why didn't this come to light before the appointment? I had given them everything they needed to verify my eligiblity, and they failed to do so. I spoke to a front desk staff member after finding this out and got specific dates… where their automated system showed that I was eligible. This included several dates before the appointment as well as the day of the appointment. When I relayed this to Tracey the billing "manager", all she would say is that it's my responsibility to determine eligiblity. I spoke to other providers of mine, and they say that it's a shared responsibility. Cigna also said that most providers call prior to the appointment to verify eligiblity. Through numerous discussions with Tracey, she refused to acknowledge the mistake on their end. They soliticited an appointment from me. They have some responsibility. So I wrote Mark Hickey, the CEO, and got no response. I asked to speak to him and was denied. Tracey keeps hammering that they did no wrong and that is not true. So, I do not recommend this practice. They refuse to do their part and acknowledge when a mistake is made. I offered to split the bill with them as a last resort, and Tracey refused. So I am now appealing through Cigna. Long story short: be sure to verify that the doctors in this practice are in-network with your insurance, because like my situation, they may assume you are covered and assure you that you are when in fact they haven't bothered to check.

Should be in a different field as he does not know enough about sleep medicine to be helpful with sleep issues.

Doesn't think Love can be a strong emotion. When had a bad mental side effect of medications his office prescribed, he seemed to refuse to believe it happened or could happen.
