Dr. Mark Kramer Hirschhorn, MD

Dr. Mark K. Hirschhorn, a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, earned his medical degree from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1989. He performed his general surgical training at New England Deaconess Hospital and completed his urologic residency at Lahey Clinic Medical center in 1994. Prior to opening his urologic practice in Biddeford, Dr. Hirschhorn served on the medical staffs of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Hospital of St. Rapheal in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Hirschhorn has made numerous presentations both during fellowship training in Australia and as a member of the Southern Maine Medical center Staff. Speaking engagements have included topics such as prostate cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia, and erectile dysfunction. He is a clinical instructor of surgery at the University of New England and actively engages in both medical student and resident education. The field of urology is continuing to grow and Dr. Hirschhorn is …committed to remaining on the cutting edge. He has expertise in some of the latest techniques in urologic surgery including prostate brachytherapy (radioactive seed implantation for prostate cancer) and Holmium LASER surgery. Dr. Hirschhorn was instrumental in bringing hand-assisted laparoscopic (HAL) urologic surgery to Maine. He and Dr. Winter were the first urologists in Maine to incorporate this minimally invasive procedure into their practices. They now have over three years experience with laparascopic urologic cancer surgery, giving them the most experience of urology practices in Maine. Laparoscopic procedures performed include: HAL kidney removal (radical nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy), laparoscopic ureteral stone and renal cyst removal (ureterolithotomy, cyst decortication, respectively) and laparoscopic kidney cancer freezing (renal cryoablation). Dr. Hirschhorn is certified by the American Board of Urology and is currently a member of the American Urological Association and the Maine Medical Society. He is also a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
