When you see him ask him if he's going to do your surgery. His answer will be "I'll be there." That's comforting right? The guy you select to do your surgery will just be there. Because it's a teaching place. According to the surgical notes "several surgeons" were involved in my fusion. I had an L4 nerve impingement before the surgery. The result of the surgery was severe numbness, burning and weakness in both legs which I've never had in my life resulting in neurogenic atrophy, which according to this doctor was normal just decompression of the nerve. Funny he said decompression of the nerve because after the surgery I have the same L4 nerve impingement as I did before the surgery. This resulted in two surgeries to repair what their fusion didn't. Mayo put in a spacer where the disc was, that should remove impingement on the nerve right, obviously wrong. Here are the results of my MRI after the fusion: L4-5, there is a broad-based posterior disc bulge present as well as a shallow disc… herniation into the left neural foramen contacting the exiting left L4 nerve root and mildly narrowing the left neural foramen. Good luck, there are hundreds of other surgeons to pick. Just don't pick Lyons or Mayo.

As the patient, I expected Dr's comments to be directed to me - not my husband. It was a waste of time. Failed to review my MRI, discounted the diagnosis and recommendations of two Orthopaedic surgeons and overall was very dismissive. Thought a neurosurgeon would be able to provide a better overall summary of the many problems with my spine and explain how they all relate. The summary....you won't fall apart. Well that's encouraging!
