Dr. Martinez E Clement, MD

I recently found myself in the emergency room at St. Clare’s hospital in Denville, NJ. My wife and daughter accompanied me to the hospital as they were frantic about my possible condition. I’m not sure how this hospital separates the staff members in the emergency room, but apparently the color of their scrub uniforms determine what their job function is. At any rate, I was accompanied back to the emergency room by a very pleasant woman in green scrubs. I assumed her to be a nurse. She brought my family and I to a curtained cubicle in the emergency room and immediately began taking my vitals and setting me up for (what I later found out to be) an EKG. My 11 year old daughter was doing her best not to cry but when the electrodes were attached to my chest, the waterworks started. My daughter was inconsolable- sobbing and clinging to my wife - my nurse was absolutely wonderful. She spoke to my daughter is a very jovial tone and made it seem as though everything was fine and that… my chest pains were merely a “tummy ache” from drinking too much soda. My daughter immediately warmed up to the nurse and her tears almost completely vanished. My nurse explained everything that she was doing (as much to my wife and daughter as to me) and when another nurse- this one is maroon scrubs -came into the room, we were all laughing and smiling. The maroon nurse was apparently a senior nurse and wasn’t very eager to do much besides bark out a few orders (strangely, everything she asked for had already been done by our green-scrubs nurse and the maroon-scrubs nurse seemed more interested in her cell phone that in me and my condition. After quite a while, the emergency room doctor came into my cubicle and began asking questions. How long, how severe, happened before, and so on. Since all these questions had been asked and answered already (some by green, some by maroon, some by both) I made a point of telling him that everything he had asked for was probably on the paperwork he had in my chart. That, apparently, was the wrong this to say and he immediately got very snippy with me and he actually said to me “If you’re not interested in helping me diagnose your condition, you’re certainly welcome to leave and see your personal physician or cardiologist tomorrow.” At that point, and I was absolutely furious and about to say a few things that I’m sure that I would have regretted later, green scrubs nurse came back into the cubicle smiling at my daughter. She asked the doctor if he needed anything and he barked over his shoulder at her “I need for you to leave me alone and let me do my job. Something you have no concept of, apparently.” The doctor - I found out later by reading my discharge paperwork - that he is Dr. Martin Clement. My wife and daughter and I sort of had to try to relax and wait for some blood test results. Miss Green scrubs brought my wife and daughter a few ginger ale sodas and a few packages of cookies and chatted with my daughter- once again making her smile and putting her back at ease. Dr Clement was apparently nearby berating another nurse - we could hear him very clearly through the cloth cubicle walls - and he was yelling at me of the nurses about OUR friendly green-scrubs nurse. He was going on and on about “hating the sound of her voice” and “wondering if she actually had any idea what she was doing.” The fact that miss green scrubs nurse had taken care of us from the moment we got to the emergency room and had done virtually everything by herself notwithstanding- his tone, manner, and complete lack of professionalism was highly disturbing. Obviously, this doctor has some sort of vendetta against our friendly and hard-working Green Scrubs nurse. Strangely enough, every time that I had a chance to look around the main emergency room area it seemed to me that the nurses in green scrubs appeared to be doing all of the work, while the maroon scrubs nurses were playing with their phones and gossiping with the doctors. I was ultimately discharged after refusing to be admitted to the hospital. My blood work was negative for some sort of enzymes that would have indicated a heart attack - I saw no need to spend a few nights in the hospital. We finally left the emergency room and as we did- we heard Dr. Clement again berating another nurse (this one in a maroon scrub uniform) asking her very loudly what kind of “Jungle she grew up in” and wanted to know if they “actually worked there” or were “used to just sitting around doing nothing.” I would never allow this man to treat me, or anyone in my family, for anything more urgent than a hang nail. He was an absolutely creepy, egomaniacal, misogynist that has so many huge holes his social filter that I am amazed that he continues to work as a doctor. If you find yourself in the St. Clare’s emergency room in Danville, NJ- and you hear an obnoxious African American doctor that is angry at the world and everyone in it- do yourself a favor and either ask for another doctor, or head over to the emergency room in Morristown, NJ.

I can't express enough how great Dr. Clement is and the blessing he has been to me and my family. Thanks to him and his knowledge he was the only one to diagnose my mom's problem in finding that she had a tumor.
